FARMINGTON, ME - The University of Maine at Farmington (1-2-2) and Saint Joseph's College (4-4-1) battled to a 2-2 draw in non-conference men's soccer action today at Prescott Field.
Trailing 2-1 with 10:59 to play, Paul Robins '11 (Cornwall,
England) netted the game-tying goal on a penalty kick attempt after
being taken down inside the UMF box. Jack LaFreniere '13 (Alton,
NH) scored on a header, just beyond the reach of Beavers keeper
Tennessee Peters (Scarborough, ME), at the 53:07 mark.
Dillon Clark (Old Town, Maine) and Jordan Hale (Falmouth, Maine)
each tallied a goal as Farmington held leads of 1-0 and 2-1, but
each time the Monks came up with a counter.
Clark gave the Beavers a 1-0 intermission when the senior scored
off a long cross by Viktor Nilsson (Linkoping, Sweden) 6:15 into
the contest.
LaFreniere's marker eight minutes into the second stanza evened the
match at 1-1, but the Beavers came back at 60:12 with Hale
converting on a play started by a Dan Horne (Bay Shore, N.Y.) pass
into the box for the 2-1 lead. Robins' tally eventually sent the
match into extra play.
Down the stretch, each team came up with key defensive stops as
Peters snuffed out two LaFreniere bids and survived a pair of
corner kicks in the 87th minute, while Hale, after looping the ball
over Monks netminder Nick Campasano (Goffstown, N.H.), had his shot
cleared from the goal mouth by Monks back Joe Happnie (Rockland,
Mass.) with a minute left in regulation to send the game to
overtime.
Peters and Campasano each made a save in the first extra session as
neither team could find a goal in the 2-2 stalemate. Peters
finished with 13 saves for the Beavers, who held a 23-20 shot
advantage. Campasano ended up with 10 stops for the Monks.
The Beavers are scheduled to kick off North Atlantic Conference action this weekend with a trip to Vermont to face Green Mountain College Saturday and Castleton State College Sunday. The Monks are slated to host Emmanuel College Saturday in Great Northeast Athletic Conference play at 11:30 AM.
