Cadets Blank Monks, 2-0

NORTHFIELD, VT – A pair of first-half markers was one more than Norwich University (8-5-2, 5-2 GNAC) needed to get past Saint Joseph's College (6-7-2, 3-3-1 GNAC) in a hard-fought Great Northeast Athletic Conference Men's Soccer contest on Saturday afternoon.

The Cadets hit paydirt in the 17th minute when Garrett Shufelt '13 (Clifton Park, NY) handled a long pass from teammate Mike Ravenelle '13 (Merrimack, NH), who took an indirect kick from the Norwich end, and put the ball past SJC keeper Nick Campasano '12 (Goffstown, NH) to make it a 1-0 game.

Ravenelle scored a goal of his own with just 32 seconds left in the opening period to put the game out of reach for the Royal Blue, who posted 17 shots but just three on net in the losing effort.

The Monks put the pedal to the metal in the second stanza, outshooting the hosts by a 14-8 margin including a header-attempt by Tyler Rand '13 (Westbrook, ME) at the 87:39 mark that was denied by Cadets goalie Alex Toomey '14 (Anchorage, AK).

Campasano notched six stops for St. Joe's, while Toomey made three saves for the hosts in the conference win.

Paul Robins '11 (Cornwall, England) led all players with five shots, while Jack LaFreniere '13 (Alton, NH) had four attempts. Joe Happnie '11 (Rockland, MA) and Ross Suleski '14 (Amesbury, MA/Saint Thomas Aquinas) both posted three shots in the loss.

St. Joe's held a 17-14 advantage in shots, while Norwich notched the lead in both shots on goal (8-3) and corner kicks (7-3) in the conference matchup. With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 2-3-1 against the Cadets in the history of the series.

The Monks will host GNAC rival Suffolk University on Wednesday at 3:30 PM, while Norwich is set to play at Lasell College on Wednesday at 4:00 PM.
