Monks Edge Huskies, 1-0

GORHAM, ME - Senior Mike Sanfilippo (Walpole, Mass.) scored the only goal of the match in the 54th minute as Saint Joseph's College defeated the University of Southern Maine, 1-0, in a non-conference men's soccer match Wednesday afternoon.  The match was the inaugural contest played on USM's new Hannaford Field.

The win was the second straight, and third of the season, for the Monks who improve to 3-1-0.  The Huskies are winless after five matches.

After a scoreless first half that saw the Monks out shoot the Huskies 10-1, Sanfilippo broke the stalemate when he took a pass from sophomore Zach Johnson (Westbrook, Maine) and slotted home an eight-yard shot.  The goal was the second of the season for Sanfilippo.

Both sides had some good offensive opportunities over the final 36 minutes, but USM junior keeper Jeremy Turner (Portland, Maine/Deering) and SJC rookie Robert Petrosillo (Methuen, Mass.) turned aside every threat. Turner finished the match with eight saves.  Petrosillo, who came on to play the second half, made two saves.  Sophomore Kenny Grade (Hampton, N.H.) started in goal for SJC and did not record a save in the opening half.

Southern Maine opens its Little East Conference schedule this Saturday (12:00 p.m.) traveling to Western Connecticut State University.  Saint Joseph's will host Albertus Magnus College in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference match in Saturday (1:00 p.m.).
