BRISTOL, RI – The Roger Williams University Men's Soccer team began the 2013 season with a 3-1 victory over Saint Joseph's College in the first game of the 9th Annual Roger Williams University Squad Locker Classic on Saturday.

The Hawks, the reigning Commonwealth Coast Conference champions, wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, as James Sheldon (Amherst, N.H.) put in his first goal of the season less than one minute into the game to give RWU an early 1-0 lead.

Trevor Hoxsie (Scarborough, Maine) followed suit in the 28th minute, traversing down the field and putting in an unassisted score at the 28:28 mark and making it a 2-0 Hawk advantage.

In the second half, Hoxsie added his second goal of the game with 67:18 on the clock. Sheldon fed Hoxsie a pass that he took to goal and put in net, marking the sixth time in his Hawk career that Hoxsie has scored multiple goals in a game.

The Monks were able to notch a score in the 71st minute, with Kyle Shangraw (Westbrook, Maine) breaking away from the RWU defense to put in his first goal of the season. However, the Hawks would maintain their two-goal advantage and earn the victory.

Jon Pelloso (Wilbraham, Mass.) earned the win, making five saves on the day, while his counterpart sophomore Scott Benner (Post Falls, Idaho), also made five saves.

In the second game of the Classic, Salve Regina University used a late goal to take a 2-1 win over Skidmore College. After a scoreless first half, Jake Weinshank (Chapel Hill, N.C.) took a pass from Jacob Pate (Smithfield, R.I.) in the 51st minute to give Salve Regina a 1-0 lead.

Andrew Pertsov (Tenafly, N.J.) hooked in a score off of a corner kick in the 71st minute to knot the game at one apiece. Yet Alex Wasilewski (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) put in a rebound off a shot by Weinshank in the 79th minute for the game winner.

Roger Williams (1-0) will face Skidmore tomorrow at 1:30 p.m., while Saint Joseph's and Salve Regina square off at 11:00 a.m.
