Monks & Seahawks Settle for Stalemate

BRISTOL, RI – Saint Joseph's College (0-1-1) and Salve Regina University (1-0-1) dueled to a 1-1 deadlock in the third game of the two-day Roger Williams University Squad Locker Classic on Sunday.

The Monks struck first when midfielder Kyle Shangraw (Westbrook, Maine) netted his second goal of the young season at the 22:26 mark of the first half. The senior transfer corralled a long pass and fired a shot from outside the box that deflected off of a Salve Regina defender and into the back of the net.

The slim margin held until the fourth minute of the second stanza when Salve Regina Alvaro Castillo (Duxbury, Mass.) gained possession and bounced a shot over the keeper to tie the game.

The Seahawks held a 7-2 shots advantage during the pair of 10-minute overtime frames but neither team would steer a shot on target during the extra 20 minutes of play.

Salve Regina's Daniel Stern (Kings Park, N.Y.) had six saves in the game while Scott Benner (Post Falls, Idaho) stopped three shots for Saint Joseph's.

The Monks held a 20-19 edge in shots while the Seahawks recorded a 10-9 lead in corner kicks in the stalemate result.

Shangraw and sophomore midfielder Jeff DeGrenier (Jaffrey, N.H.) claimed All-Tournament honors for Saint Joseph's.

With the tie, Saint Joseph's is now 1-0-1 in the history of the series with Salve Regina University – which finished as the runner-up in the Commonwealth Coast Conference Tournament a year ago.

The Monks return to action this Wednesday when the team hosts Thomas College in the 2013 home-opener at Westerlea Way Field. Kick-off is slated for 4:00 PM.
