STANDISH, Maine – University of Massachusetts-Boston (8-4-0, 3-0-0 LEC) blanked Saint Joseph's College (3-11-0, 1-3-0 GNAC), 4-0, in a non-conference men's soccer match at Westerlea Way Field on Tuesday afternoon.
The Beacons scored two goals in each half, starting with a goal from junior Pedro Dasilva (Fogo, Cape Verde) off a Douglas Silveira (Revere, Mass.) pass in the 18th minute. Senior Lenir Lima (Mindelo, Cape Verde) doubled the visitors' advantage with a tally, his first of the year, off a Dasilva feed just over six minutes later.
Freshman Calvin Smick (Wilmington, Del.) padded the Beacons' cushion with his first NCAA marker 4:46 into the second stanza. First-year midfielder Joshua Khang (Brockton, Mass.) was credited with an assist on the play.
Sophomore forward Pedro De Carvalho (Praia, Cape Verde) potted his first collegiate goal, off a Silveira helper, in the 53rd minute to account for the 4-0 final.
Saint Joseph's junior keeper Scott Benner (Post Falls, Idaho) made five saves in the loss while UMass.-Boston junior netminder Estive Sosa (Chelsea, Mass.) tallied four stops in what was the second-consecutive shutout for the visitors.
The Beacons owned a 20-7 lead in shots and a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks on the afternoon. With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 1-6 all-time versus UMass.-Boston, a side the Monks had not faced since the 2006 campaign. St. Joe's has not defeated the Beacons since 2001.
Monks' first-year Head Coach Adrian Dubois was quite familiar with today's opponent, as he served as an assistant for the Beacons last season.
Saint Joseph's returns to the pitch on Friday with a 7:00 PM kick-off versus GNAC-rival Norwich University in Northfield, Vermont. UMass.-Boston hosts LEC foe Western Connecticut State University at 1:00 PM on Saturday.
