Mattos Named GNAC Player & Rookie of the Week

STANDISH, Maine – The Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) weekly honors have been announced and Saint Joseph's College freshman Brett Mattos (Mahopac, N.Y.) has been selected as the GNAC Men's Soccer Player and Rookie of the Week.

Mattos scored at least once in each of the Monks' four games last week and totaled six goals overall to help Saint Joseph's post a 3-1 record during the reporting period. The GNAC goals and points leader popped the game-winner versus Mount Ida College on Monday and netted four goals during the weekend, with two against Johnson & Wales and another pair versus Lyndon State College.

Through 15 games this fall, Mattos has netted 13 goals with two assists for 28 total points. He leads the conference in goals and assists and ranks second in shot percentage (.500) and game-winning goals (3). The weekly conference accolades are the first of his collegiate career.

No first-year player in the history of Saint Joseph's men's soccer has scored more goals or tallied more points, as Mattos surpassed Shawn Humprey '92 in both categories when he scored twice against Lyndon State yesterday. Humphrey scored 11 goals and totaled 24 points in his first season (1991).

Mattos is also the first Saint Joseph's player to garner both top Player and top Rookie honors since the Monks began play in the GNAC in the fall of 2007.

Saint Joseph's (10-4-1, 5-2-0 GNAC) is off until Saturday when the Monks host the Cadets of Norwich University (10-4-1, 6-1-0 GNAC) at 12:00 PM in a GNAC match filled with postseason implications.
