WATERVILLE, Maine – Freshman Jackson Taylor (Gorham, Maine) netted his first collegiate goal with 4.7 seconds remaining in regulation to break a scoreless tie and lift Saint Joseph's College (1-1-1) past Colby College (0-1-0), 1-0, on Tuesday evening.

With time winding down and extra play almost certainly on the docket, the Monks were awarded a corner kick. Sophomore Jesse Ramirez (Dumont, N.J.) took the corner and sent in a harmless volley with about 13 seconds remaining. With members of both teams jockeying for position, a Colby defender momentarily claimed possession but his off balance clear attempt landed on the foot of Taylor. The freshman, who was stationed just outside the box, delivered a shot that ricocheted off a defender and clanged off the inside of the right post before falling into the net with 4.7 on the clock.

Taylor scored his first collegiate goal after entering the game with about three minutes to play.

Saint Joseph's had a 9-8 edge in shots and had all seven of its corner kicks in the second half. The Mules had five corner kicks with a 3-0 margin in the category in the first half.

There were two solid scoring chances in the final 18 minutes before Taylor's goal. Nicholas Borowski (Webster, Mass.) had a hard shot with about 18 minutes to play that forced Colby goalkeeper Avery Gibson (Needham, Mass.) to make a diving stop to his right. Colby's best chance came with about seven minutes to play when Aidan Black (Cumberland Center, Maine) broke free on the right side and slipped a shot past Monk goalkeeper Blake Mullen (Manchester, Conn.), but the ball just went wide left.

Mullen picked up his first shutout of the season after making one save over 90 minutes while Gibson registered three saves in a losing effort.

With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 2-6 in the history of the series with Colby College, a team the Monks last defeated – by a 2-1 margin – on October 10th, 2001 in Standish. Tonight's meeting versus the Mules is the Monks' first since October 12th, 2006, when Colby topped St. Joe's by a 4-2 score in Waterville.

For Saint Joseph's, the win over a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) opponent is just the second in program history (the first being the aforementioned win over Colby in 2001). Prior to this evening, the Monks had suffered 18 consecutive losses at the hands of NESCAC programs and had not even faced a NESCAC foe since the 2012 campaign, when SJC faced Bowdoin College and Bates College, falling by 4-0 and 3-1 scores, respectively.

Saint Joseph's returns to action Friday with a non-conference game versus Castleton State College in the Adidas Challenge Cup hosted by Husson University. Opening kick-off is scheduled for 5:00 PM.
