Monks and Spartans Play to 1-1 Tie

BANGOR, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (1-1-2) and Castleton University (0-2-1) played to a 1-1 tie in the Adidas Challenge Cup on the campus of Husson University on Friday night.

THE LEAD

All of the game's offense occurred in the final minute of regulation, as Castleton senior forward Seth Wilmott (Barre, Vt.) put the Spartans on the board – and ended a season-opening scoring drought of nearly 270 minutes – with a free kick strike at the 89:15 mark before Saint Joseph's sophomore defender Dalton Gaumer (Corona, Calif.) buried a penalty kick 30 seconds later.

THE KEEPERS

St. Joe's sophomore Blake Mullen (Manchester, Conn.) tallied a pair of saves in goal while his counterpart, Castleton junior Aaron Parker (Windsor, Vt.), totaled 10 stops in the deadlock.

GOAL HISTORY

1.              89:15     CSTMSOC              Seth Wilmott (1)                (unassisted)

Spartans drew a penalty just outside of the 18-yard box and Wilmott curled the ball around a wall of SJC defenders and off the crossbar into the goal

2.              89:45     SJMMS16             Dalton Gaumer (1)            Penalty kick

Just 30 seconds later, the Monks were rewarded a penalty kick - after the Spartans were called for a handball in the box – and Gaumer delivered a shot to the low left corner

TEAM STATS

Saint Joseph's held a 20-7 shots advantage with an 11-3 lead in shots on goal. Both teams took three corner kicks in the stalemate.
