STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (9-1-3, 4-0 GNAC) and Keene State College (6-4-1, 2-1 LEC) dueled to a 0-0 tie in non-conference men's soccer action at Westerlea Way Field on Tuesday afternoon.

SCORING CHANCES

For the Monks, the best scoring chance came late in the first half as a result of an impressive effort by freshman Quaadir Palmer (Trenton, N.J.), who had just entered the game as a substitution.

In the 37th minute, with the Owls attempting to clear out of their box, Palmer claimed possession, stayed strong on the ball midst several Keene defenders, and passed off to classmate JoJo Strobino (Clifton, N.J.), who got off a close range shot that was stopped by junior keeper Jason Smith (Gales Ferry, Conn.). Junior Trevor Lopes (Cumberland, R.I.) corralled the rebound, but Smith, who left his post to challenge the play, denied his shot. Finally, Palmer had a good look at a keeper-free goal, but a Keene defender cleared out his shot.

The Monks also earned a pair of corners in the final minute of regulation, but neither attempt resulted in a shot.

For the Owls, junior Promise Kpee (Manchester, N.H.) had several good chances, including a pair of bicycle kick shots, but could not find the back of the net. The visitors' best chance came in the 109th minute when SJC sophomore goalie Blake Mullen (Manchester, Conn.) strayed from the goalmouth and junior Aidan Dean (Laconia, N.H.) let fly an odd-angle shot that trickled wide-left.

THE KEEPERS

Mullen made three saves for the Monks while Smith registered five stops in the shutout effort.

TEAM STATS

As the score indicates, the teams played very close with Keene holding a slight advantage in shots (17-13) and Saint Joseph's leading in shots on goal (5-3) and corner kicks (7-6) on the afternoon.

NOTABLE

• The Monks received a shot in the arm from outstanding bench play, with Palmer, Lopes, and junior Austin Bell (Gorham, Maine) accounting for seven of the hosts' 13 shots
• With the tie, St. Joe's increases the team's program-record undefeated streak to 11 games
• The Monks have not allowed an opponent to score in the last 655 minutes of play (the Johnson & Wales tally on October 1st was an own goal)
• Kpee led all players with five shots with just one attempt being on goal

Today's contest counts as the first-ever between the Keene State and Saint Joseph's men's soccer programs.

Both teams are back in action facing conference opponents this Saturday, when Saint Joseph's travels to Albertus Magnus College for a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest starting at 3:15 PM and Keene hosts Eastern Connecticut State University in a Little East Conference (LEC) match slated for a 1:00 PM kick-off.
