Monks Tip Huskies, 1-0

STANDISH, Maine – Sophomore Mitchell Duncan (Sanford, Maine) scored a goal on a header in the 60th minute to help lift #23 Saint Joseph's College (14-0-1) past University of Southern Maine (5-9-2), 1-0, in a hard-fought non-conference men's soccer match at the SJC Athletics Complex on Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

After recording a handful of close scoring chances, several thwarted by USM freshman keeper Richard Glemawu (Accra, Ghana), the Monks finally hit pay dirt when Duncan flicked a header, off a well-placed right-to-left volley from Brett Mattos (Mahopac, N.Y.), to the top right corner of the net for his seventh goal of the season.

Applying pressure late in the second half, the Huskies registered several good opportunities, including a shot taken by freshman Riley Dinsmore-Patch (Eliot, Maine) that rocketed off the crossbar at the 68:58 mark.

THE KEEPERS:

Saint Joseph's junior Blake Mullen (Manchester, Conn.) made a pair of saves to pick up his eighth shutout of the year and 24th blank sheet of his career. Glemawu kept the Huskies in the game with several acrobatic stops and finished the night with seven saves.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held considerable advantages in shots (15-4), shots on goal (9-2), and corner kicks (7-0) in the victory.

OF NOTE:

Tonight's victory extends the Monks' program-record winning streak to 10 games…the three SJC fall field teams are undefeated at the new complex with a 16-0-2 collective record.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the win, Saint Joseph's improves to 12-12-4 in the history of the series with University of Southern Maine. Last fall, the Monks tipped the Huskies by the same 1-0 score in Gorham (10/2/16).
