WENHAM, Mass. – #19 Saint Joseph's College (1-0-1) and Gordon College (1-0-1) dueled to a scoreless tie in a non-conference men's soccer match on Saturday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Both squads battled back-and-forth throughout the entirety of the first half but were equally committed on the defensive side of the ball to eliminate any and every scoring threat, leaving the game in a heated scoreless draw at the half.
That duel continued into the second half of play, as the Scots and Monks put up equal numbers on shots (three a side) but neither was able to break its way onto the board, thus forcing a winner-take-all overtime.
The Monks had the best opportunity of the night in the first overtime when a Scots foul and subsequent free kick from 35 yards out on the right side sent a potential game-winner in to the head of SJC's Michael Wildes (Winslow, Maine), but Gordon keeper Brody Veleber snagged the attempt on frame to keep the game tied.
TEAM STATS:
Saint Joseph's held the lead in shots (9-6) and shots on goal (6-2) on the evening while Gordon posted a 4-2 edge in corner kicks
THE KEEPERS:
SJC junior David Walbridge (Hampden, Mass.) turned away two shots while Veleber made six saves for the hosts.
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the tie Saint Joseph's is now 1-1-1 all-time versus Gordon College. The Monks blanked the Fighting Scots by a 3-0 score last fall.
Tonight's contest marks the first time that St. Joe's has been held scoreless since the Monks dueled Tufts University to a 0-0 tie in the second round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament (11/12/17). The Jumbos eventually prevailed in a round of penalty kicks.
NEXT!
