Monks Score Twice Late, Tip Eagles 3-2

STANDISH, Maine - #19 Saint Joseph's College (2-0-1) scored twice in a matter of 90 seconds late in the second half to defeat Husson University (0-2-0), 3-2, in a non-conference men's soccer contest at the SJC Athletics Complex on Tuesday evening. The contest was the Monks' 2019 home-opener.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Senior Mitchell Duncan (Sanford, Maine) put the Monks on the board with his first goal of the year at the 13:32 mark, when he corralled a corner kick off the foot of classmate Cody Elliott (Gorham, Maine) and weaved a shot through traffic into the back of the net.

The 1-0 margin remained until the 44th minute when junior Jahmal Williams (Wingdale, N.Y.) collected a bounding kick from his keeper, senior Kyle Townsend (Hampden, Maine), down the left side deep in the Monks' end, turned a corner and delivered an odd-angle shot from the backline that sailed between SJC netminder David Walbridge (Hampden, Mass.) and the left post.

Williams bookended the impressive play just 1:38 into the second half, when he lifted the visitors to a 2-1 edge with a mirror copy of his first-stanza capper. Finding a bit of space down the right side of the pitch, the junior again turned to the goal and sent another seeing-eye shot from near the endline to the back of the net.

Saint Joseph's had numerous chances to tie the game but did not do so until the 80th minute, when senior Noah Robinson (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) directed a header into the top left corner off a well-placed Ryan Buonaiuto (Scituate, R.I.) pass.

Sophomore defender Michael Wildes (Winslow, Maine) managed to net the game-clincher – his second of the young season – just 93 seconds later. Townsend left his post to challenge an odd-man scoring threat and was caught out of position, leaving position players to man the net. Wildes took advantage and leveled a waist-high shot through several defenders into the left side of the net. Elliott was credited with an assist on the winning tally.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held sizeable leads in shots (21-9), shots on goal (11-7), and corner kicks (10-3) in the victory. Husson was flagged for 19 fouls and seven yellow cards in the physical matchup. St. Joe's committed 15 fouls.

THE KEEPERS:

Walbridge turned away five shots in the SJC victory while Townsend posted eight stops in the losing effort for the Eagles.
