STANDISH, Maine – WPI (9-2-4) edged Saint Joseph's College (12-1-2), 1-0, in a hard fought non-conference men's soccer contest at the SJC Athletics Complex on Monday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Engineers netted the game's only goal in the 65th minute, when senior Liam Setterlund (Holden, Mass.) banged home a cross from the right goal post off a throw-in. Freshman Franco Bazzini (San Juan, P.R.) was credited with an assist on the play.

The Monks poured on the offensive pressure in the closing 20 minutes but could not solve the stout WPI defense or junior keeper Rufus Adams (Duxbury, Mass.), who finished the night with four saves.

SJC junior netminder David Walbridge (Hampden, Mass.) turned away four shots in the losing effort.

TEAM STATS:

The New England region opponents were incredibly even on the stat sheet, as the Monks held slight advantages in shots (12-10) and corner kicks (3-1) while the Engineers posted a 5-4 edge in shots on goal.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • The loss brings an end to several of the Monks' lengthy undefeated streaks, as the Royal Blue entered tonight's action riding a 65-game (59-0-6) regular-season undefeated streak, which included a string of 38-consecutive (34-0-4) home games without a loss
  • Tonight's setback is also the Monks' first at the SJC Athletics Complex – St. Joe's started this evening's game with a 27-0-2 record on their home turf
  • WPI, which owns the best goals-against average (0.268) in all of NCAA men's soccer, has registered six-consecutive clean sheets
