Monks Sweep on Senior Day

STANDISH, Maine – The Saint Joseph's College swim teams swept a meet with Husson University at the Harold Alfond Center Pool on Saturday afternoon. The women won 10 of the 14 events and posted a 151-96 victory while the men also won 10 events en route to completing the sweep with a 119-71 triumph.

Prior to the start of the event the Saint Joseph's swim team held a brief ceremony to honor the squad's three seniors: Adam Gaulin (Belfast, Maine), Preston Bowden (Biddeford, Maine) and Kelly Carter (Dedham, Mass.). This trio has played a significant role in the development of the eighth-year program during their time in the pool and will certainly be missed.

For the men, Bowden placed first in the 50-Back (28.38) and 200-Back (2:15.83) and junior Andrew Merlino (Natick, Mass.) won the 100-Fly (1:02.80) and 500-Free (5:58.52) and was the runner-up in the 200-IM (2:28.98).

Gaulin won the 100-Breast (1:10.08) and was second in the 200-Free (2:04.92) and 50-Breast (30.96) events, junior Alexander Gilvey (Windham, Maine) won the 200-IM (2:15.66) and was second in the 100-Free (53.06) and 50-Fly (26.39) races, and sophomore Ben Johnson (Belmont, Mass.) topped the field in the 200-Free (2:02.77) and was the runner-up in the 50-Free (24.54).

Gilvey, Johnson, Merlino and Bowden swam legs for the Monks' winning 200-Medley relay (1:50.17) team and sophomore Dakota Dupuis (Dedham, Maine) Gaulin, Johnson and Bowden formed the SJC quartet that topped the field in the 200-Free relay (1:38.31).

On the women's side, junior Brooke Huberdeau (North Andover, Mass.) highlighted the day with top finishes in the 200-Free (2:13.30), 100-Free (1:02.57) and 500-Free (5:56.50) while junior Anne Fougere (Warner, N.H.) won the 50-Breast (36.37) and 100-Breast (1:20.17) events.

Sophomore Lauren Halvorsen (South Portland, Maine) won the 1000-Free (12:46.45) and was the runner-up in the 500-Free (6:13.51) while second-year Danielle Charette (Westfield, Mass.) was the top finisher in the 50-Back (33.04) and finished second in the 50-Fly (32.09).

Sophomore Lauren Prue (Glenburn, Maine) was second in the 50-Breast (37.60) and 100-Breast (1:20.17), sophomore Erin Weir (North Andover, Mass.) was the runner-up in the 100-Fly (1:20.41), and junior Alexandra Krasco (Melrose, Mass.) was placed second in the 200-Back (2:35.74) and 200-IM (2:39) events.

The lone senior on the women's team, Carter swam legs for the Monks' 'C' 200-Medley (2:35.51) and 'B' 200-Free (2:18.29) relay teams and placed fourth in the 100-Free (1:13.30) and fifth in the 50-Free (33.49) individually.

Krasco, Fougere, Prue and Huberdeau swam legs for the Monks' winning 200-Medley relay (2:12.37) team while Fougere, Charette, Weir and Halvorsen combined to help Saint Joseph's win the 200-Free relay (1:58.24).

Saint Joseph's hosts Gordon College next Saturday at 1:00 PM.
