Gilvey Becomes First SJC Men's Swimmer to Record 50 Individual Wins

STANDISH, Maine – Senior standout Alexander Gilvey (Windham, Maine) became the first Saint Josephs' College men's swimmer to notch 50 individual victories with a win at Gordon College on Saturday, January 30th.

Gilvey reached the milestone with a 27.26 time in the 50-Back, an effort that paced a field of four individuals at the Bennett Athletic Center on the campus of Gordon College.

Gilvey has recorded wins in 14 different individual events, with 10 in both the 100-Back and 50-Back, six in the 200-Free, five in the 500-Free, and four in the 100-Fly. He has also topped the field in the 100-IM (3), 200-Back (3), 200-IM (3), 100-Breast (1), 100-Free (1), 200-Breast (1), 400-IM (1), 50-Fly (1), and 50-Free (1) races.

The victory was Gilvey's 16th of the year, a tally that counts as the most amassed by an SJC men's swimmer in a single season, as the senior captain broke the former mark – 15, set originally by Kevin Towne '11 and tied by Gilvey in 2013 – with the win at Gordon.

Gilvey, who is also the Monks' career leader in individual events (134), won nine races as a freshman, 15 as a sophomore, and 10 during his junior campaign.

With two wins (100-Back, 200-Back) in the 2012 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Championship, Gilvey is the only St. Joe's men's swimmer to garner All-GNAC honors.

Gilvey currently owns the program records in the 200-Back (2:02.48), 100-Back (55.36), 50-Back (25.86), and 400-IM (4:47.25) and has also swum legs for the Monks' top 400-Medley (3:50.20) and 200-Free (1:33.69) relay teams.

In the history of the Saint Joseph's swim program, Gilvey trails only Hannah Gajewski '12 in the career victories department. Gajewski registered 61 individual wins and remains as the program record-holder in seven events.

Gilvey, along with fellow seniors Andrew Merlino (Natick, Mass.), Annie Fougere (Warner, N.H.), Brooke Huberdeau (Andover, Mass.), and Allie Krasco (Melrose, Mass.), completes his collegiate career this weekend when the Monks compete in the 2016 New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Association (NEISDA) Championship at University of Rhode Island. The three-day event begins Friday and concludes on Sunday.
