NEISDA Championship: Day Three Recap

KINGSTON, R.I. – KINGSTON, R.I. – The 2017 New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving (NEISDA) Championships, hosted at the University of Rhode Island, concluded on Sunday evening. The Saint Joseph's College women placed 17th with 145 team points while the men finished 12th with 63 points in the three-day event.

Roger Williams University swept the event, with both men's and women's championships, for the first time in team history. The Hawks' women totaled 1,452 points to claim their second-consecutive NEISDA crown while the Roger Williams men tallied 823 points to earn the program's first NEISDA title.

The 2016 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Champions, Simmons College (women) and Norwich University (men) both fared well, as the Sharks finished as the runner-up with 1,259 points and the Cadets placed second with 590 points.

DAY THREE RUNDOWN – MEN:

  • Sophomore Stephen Quinlan (Andover, Mass.) finished 15th in the 100-IM finals with a 1:02.10 time after posting a 1:01.42 effort in the prelims
  • Sophomore Zack Gryskwicz (Standish, Maine) broke his own team record and finished 10th in the 1650-Free finals with a 19:02.50 performance
  • Quinlan, Gryskwicz, Madison Bodine (South China, Maine), and Austin Bear (Hanover, Maine) registered a 3:51.75 time – over 20 seconds faster than the quartet's previous best – in the 400-Free Relay trials

DAY THREE RUNDOWN – WOMEN:

  • Senior Lauren Halvorsen (South Portland, Maine) placed eighth in the 1650-Free with a 20:23.06 performance
  • Freshman Alexis Coiley (Fort Fairfield, Maine) was 11th in the 1650-Free with a 20:35.72 effort
  • Senior Erin Weir (North Andover, Mass.) competed in the 100-Free (1:02.67) and 50-Back (33.46) prelims
  • Freshman Emily Roy (Sidney, Maine) recorded a 1:09.70 time in the 100-IM trials
  • Sophomore Julia Rowlett (Saco, Maine) raced in the 200-Fly (2:45.01) prelims
  • Sophomore Alicia Robinson (Gorham, Maine) participated in the 100-Free (1:01.42) trials
  • Weir, Robinson, Coiley, and Halvorsen posted a 4:06.05 time in the 400-Free Relay prelims

OVERALL HIGHLIGHTS

  • Sunday's finale signaled the end of collegiate competition for the Monks' three seniors: Lauren Prue (Glenburn, Maine), Halvorsen, and Weir – Prue and Halvorsen swam all four years at Saint Joseph's while Weir competed for three seasons
  • Gryskwicz broke the Monks' 1650-Free record (19:02.50) for the second time this season
  • Quinlan appeared in three finals events (200-IM – 2:13.24 – 13th; 50-Breast – 31.88 – 14th; 100-IM – 1:02.10 – 15th)
  • The men's 400-Medley relay team placed eighth with a 4:22.28 time on Friday
  • Three SJC women advanced to finals events, as Halvorsen (20:23.06 – 8th) and Coiley (20:35.72 – 11th) competed in the 1650-Free finals and Roy raced in the 200-Back (2:23.13 – 16th) championship
  • A pair of relay teams competed in women's finals, as the 400-Medley (4:35.59) and 800-Free (8:55.83) quartets both finished 15th
  • Roy tied the Monks' 100-Back record (1:06.70) leading off the 400-Medley Relay on Friday
  • On the women's side, eight swimmers combined to compete in 22 preliminary races
  • Three men's swimmers combined to race in six prelims
  • The men's and women's teams both featured relay quartets in the 400-Medley, 200-Medley, 400-Free, and 200-Free preliminary events
