GNAC Championship: Day One Recap

BOSTON, Mass. – Saint Joseph's College kicked off the 2017 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Swimming and Diving Championship at Simmons College on Saturday. The women capped the first day of the two-day event in fifth place with 170.5 points. The men, competing in the GNAC Men's Swimming and Diving Invitational, are currently in fourth with 70 points through 22 events.

RECAP – MEN:

Through 22 events on the men's side, Norwich University – winners of six-straight GNAC Invitational titles – is again in the top slot with 186 points while Regis (Mass.) is in second with 86 points. Elms College (55), Saint Joseph's (50), Colby-Sawyer (38), and Husson University (33) and round out the remainder of the men's six-team field.

For the Monks, five individuals have advanced to the finals thus far while the team has also raced in a pair of relay finals.

SJC HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Mason Scully (Sanford, Maine), Zack Gryskwicz (Standish, Maine), Joey Christian (Scarborough, Maine), and Stephen Quinlan (Andover, Mass.) finished third in the 200-Free Relay (1:37.48)
  • Christian, Quinlan, Caleb Levine (Portland, Maine/Waynflete), and Scully posted a fourth-place finish in the 400-Medley Relay (4:07.68)
  • Quinlan tallied eight points by finishing fourth in the 200-IM (2:13.20) and sixth in the 100-Breast (1:09.51)
  • Christian also registered eight points and placed fourth in the 200-Back (2:20.81) and sixth in the 500-Free (5:29.46)
  • Levine chipped in with seven points after posting a fifth-place time in the 100-Fly (59.08) and a sixth-place effort in the 200-IM (2:18.45)
  • Gryskwicz finished sixth in the 200-Back (2:23.43) and eighth in the 200-IM (2:21.10) en route to contributing four points
  • Sophomore Austin Bear (Hanover, Maine) advanced to the 100-Breast finals and placed eighth with a 1:21.05 effort

RECAP – WOMEN:

Through 22 events on the women's side, Simmons College – winners of 12-consecutive GNAC Championships – are comfortably in the lead with 579 points while Regis College is in second with 277.5 and Colby-Sawyer College is in third with 239 points. Norwich University is fourth (177), Saint Joseph's fifth (170.5), Husson University sixth (134), University of Saint Joseph seventh (117), and Elms College eighth (69).

For Saint Joseph's, eight individuals have combined to appear in 14 finals races and a pair of relay finals through the first day of action.

SJC HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Emily Roy (Sidney, Maine), Rose Baillie (Cape Elizabeth, Maine), Julia Rowlett (Saco, Maine), and Alexis Coiley (Fairfield, Maine) posted a runner-up finish in the 400-Medley Relay with a 4:30.62 performance
  • Coiley, Autumn Nostrom (Lyman, Maine), Rowlett, and Hailey Bouyea (Lewiston, Maine) placed fifth in the 200-Free Relay with a 1:53.96 effort
  • Baillie notched 28.5 total points with a fourth-place finish in the 100-Breast (1:12.13) and a fifth-place effort in the 200-IM (2:28.51)
  • Coiley produced 26 points with sixth-place performances in the 500-Free (5:51.29) and 200-Free (2:09.57) races
  • Roy tallied 25 points by placing sixth in the 200-Back (2:22.54) and seventh in the 200-IM (2:29.43) and broke her team 200-Back record with a 2:22.16 time in the 200-Back prelims
  • Rowlett contributed 10 points with an 11th-place effort in the 100-Fly (1:15.41) and a 13th-place time in the 200-Back (2:33.13)
  • Bouyea chipped in with seven points after placing 12th in the 100-Breast (1:21.11) and 15th in the 200-IM (2:53.96)
  • Nostrom finished 11th in the 100-Breast (1:20.30) and notched six points
  • Senior Leia Berube (Brewer, Maine) advanced to the finals in two events and registered five points after finishing 14th in the 200-IM (2:48.74) and 15th in the 200-Back (2:49.49)
  • Junior Emily Tourangeau (Scarborough, Maine) placed 16th in the 100-Fly (1:50.82)

The action resumes – and concludes, later in the day – tomorrow with the preliminary events starting at 9:30 AM and the finals kicking off at 4:00 PM.
