BOSTON, Mass. – The Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Swimming and Diving Championship concluded on Sunday night at Simmons College and the Saint Joseph's College women's team placed fourth with 313.5 points while the SJC men also finished fourth with 93 points.

Three team records were broken over the weekend, as sophomore Emily Roy (Sidney, Maine) set new marks in the 200-Back (2:22.16) and 100-Back (1:06.57) and freshman Joey Christian (Scarborough, Maine) topped the Monks' 1650-Free record with an 18:53.98 performance.

RECAP – MEN:

Norwich University claimed the program's seventh consecutive GNAC title with 348 points, comfortably ahead of runner-up Regis (Mass.), which posted 168 points. Elms College finished third (113), Saint Joseph's was fourth (93), Colby-Sawyer College placed fifth (80), and Husson University finished sixth (57).

For the Monks, five individuals combined to race in 14 finals events and four relay finals.

SJC HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Freshman Caleb Levine (Portland, Maine/Waynflete) advanced to the finals in three events and tallied 13 total points after finishing third in the 200-Fly (2:11.65), fifth in the 100-Fly (59.08), and sixth in the 200-IM (2:18.45)
  • Freshman Joey Christian (Scarborough, Maine) tallied 11 points and placed fourth in the 200-Back (2:20.81), with sixth-place finishes in the 1650-Free (18:53.98) and 500-Free (5:29.46) events
  • Junior captain Stephen Quinlan (Andover, Mass.) also posted 11 points after placing fourth in the 200-IM (2:13.20) and sixth in the 100-IM (1:00.93) and 100-Breast (1:09.51) races
  • Junior Zack Gryskwicz (Standish, Maine) notched seven points with sixth-place performances in the 100-Free (53.31) and 200-Back (2:23.43) competitions and an eighth-place time in the 200-IM (2:21.10)
  • Sophomore Austin Bear (Hanover, Maine) also racked up seven points with a third-place effort in the 200-Breast (2:59.43) and an eighth-place time in the 100-Breast (1:21.05)
  • Gryskwicz, Quinlan, Levine, and Scully placed third in the 200-Medley Relay (1:51.80)
  • Scully, Gryskwicz, Christian, and Quinlan posted a third-place effort in the 200-Free Relay (1:37.48)
  • Scully, Christian, Gryskwicz, and Levine raced to a fourth-place finish in the 400-Free Relay (3:36.31)
  • Christian, Quinlan, Levine, and Scully finished fourth in the 400-Medley Relay (4:07.68)

RECAP – WOMEN:

The Simmons College women's swimming & diving team won its 14th consecutive Great Northeast Athletic Conference Championship and 16th in the last 17 years with 1104 points (exact same total as last year), well ahead of runner-up Regis (Mass.), which tallied 541.5 points. Colby-Sawyer College totaled 510 points to finish third, Saint Joseph's raced to a fourth-place finish with 313.5 points, and Norwich University rounded out the top five with 310 points. Husson University (297), University of Saint Joseph (280), and Elms College (174) closed out the group of eight competing institutions.

For Saint Joseph's, eight swimmers combined to participate in 27 finals events and four relay races.

SJC HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Freshman Rose Baillie (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) highlighted the event for the Monks with a team-high 44.5 points after finishing third in the 50-Breast (33.60), fourth in the 100-Breast (1:12.13), and fifth in the 200-IM (2:28.51)
  • Sophomore Alexis Coiley (Fort Fairfield, Maine) produced 40 points with a fifth-place effort in the 1650-Free (20:27.97) and sixth-place times in the 200-Free (2:09.57) and 500-Free (5:51.29)
  • Sophomore Emily Roy (Sidney, Maine), who registered 38 points, broke the SJC 100-Back record and placed sixth in the event with a 1:06.57 performance, placed sixth in the 200-Back (2:22.54), and seventh in the 200-IM (2:29.43); she also broke her own team 200-Back record with a 2:22.16 prelim time on Saturday
  • Junior captain Julia Rowlett (Saco, Maine) racked up 21 points after placing eighth in the 200-Fly (2:53.38), 11th in the 100-Fly (1:15.41), and 13th in the 200-Back (2:33.13) events
  • Sophomore Autumn Nostrom (Lyman, Maine) was ninth in the 200-Breast (2:58.19), 11th in the 100-Breast (1:20.30), and 14th in the 100-IM (1:13.88) and tallied 18 points
  • Sophomore Hailey Bouyea (Lewiston, Maine) posted 14 points after finishing 10th in the 200-Breast (3:03.64), 12th in the 100-Breast (1:21.11), and 15th in the 200-IM (2:53.96)
  • Senior captain Leia Berube (Brewer, Maine) advanced to a team-high four final events and contributed 13 points after placing 10th in the 200-Fly (3:08.41), 14th in the 200-IM (2:48.74), 15th in the 200-Back (2:49.49), and 16th in the 100-Back (1:20.31) races
  • Junior Emily Tourangeau (Scarborough, Maine) raced in the 100-Fly final and placed 16th with a 1:50.82 effort
  • Roy, Baillie, Rowlett, and Coiley posted a second-place finish in the 400-Medley Relay (4:30.62)
  • Coiley, Baillie, Nostrom, and Roy finished third in the 400-Free Relay (4:05.69)
  • Roy, Baillie, Rowlett, and Nostrom were fourth in the 200-Medley Relay (2:03.28)
  • Coiley, Nostrom, Rowlett, and Bouyea placed fifth in the 200-Free Relay (1:53.96)

Saint Joseph's is off until Monday, January 15th when both teams host University of New England in a 12:00 PM start.
