Monks Post Pair of Wins over Raiders, 2-1 & 6-3

NASHUA, NH – Saint Joseph's College (23-3, 15-1 GNAC) swept a GNAC doubleheader with Rivier University (8-18, 2-12 GNAC) with 2-1 and 6-3 victories over the Raiders on Sunday afternoon.

With the nightcap triumph, Co-Head Coach Dick Bailey reached the 500-victory plateau for his career. Bailey, who skippered the Monks for 11 seasons (1985-95), is now 500-312 (.616) over 27 years as a collegiate coach. Appointed as a co-head coach prior to the 2013 season, Bailey was 278-114 (.709) in his first stint at SJC, added two wins at Westbrook College in 1996, and 197-177 (.527) in 13 seasons (1997-09) as the head coach at Colby College.

GAME ONE – Saint Joseph's 2, Rivier 1

Trailing 1-0 heading into the top of the fourth, the Monks managed to tie the contest with a run off two hits, as senior left fielder Theresa Hendrix (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) singled and later scored on a base hit off the bat of junior right fielder Victoria Ramos (North Scituate, R.I.).

Freshman shortstop Danica Gleason (South Portland, Maine) led off the sixth with a single through the left side and eventually scored the game-winning run on a single by sophomore first baseman Melissa Mayhew (Hiram, Maine).

For the Monks, Mayhew and senior Lindsay Moore (Barrington, N.H.) tallied two hits apiece while senior starter Rae-Marie Copan (Newton, Mass.) recovered from a tough Saturday outing by allowing a run off three hits with five strikeouts in a complete-game triumph.

GAME TWO – Saint Joseph's 6, Rivier 3

Saint Joseph's wasted little time getting out in front in the closing contest, as the Royal Blue scored a single run in the first and two in the second to secure an early 3-0 cushion.

With two out in the first, Moore reached on an infield error and scored two batters later when Hendrix singled. In the second, junior third baseman Kim Jordan (Bangor, Maine) plated a pair – Megen Pollini (Wolfeboro, N.H.) and Carla Tripp (Lovell, Maine) - with a single through the left side.

The Monks tacked on their fourth run in the fourth frame when Pollini singled and scored on a Connie Grovo (Limington, Maine) sacrifice fly.

The Raiders answered by scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth, cutting the SJC lead down to 4-3, but the Royal Blue responded with two runs off three hits and a Rivier error in the fifth to put the game away. Gleason opened with a single and scored on a double by Hendrix, who scored herself when Pollini rapped a base knock up the middle, accounting for the 6-3 final.

For the Monks, Hendrix was 3-4 with a run, a double, a triple and two RBI and Pollini went 3-4 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI. Freshman pitcher Kylie McFadden (Dover, N.H.) picked up the win in the circle after yielding three runs off five hits with a pair of K's in four innings. First-year Danielle Egan (Waterboro, Maine) tossed three innings of highly-effective relief, allowing a hit and a walk with five K's to close out the contest.

Saint Joseph's plays at Bowdoin College on Tuesday in a non-conference doubleheader scheduled to begin at 3:30 PM.
