Softball Tops Chatham, Falls to Ohio Northern

CLERMONT, Fla. – For the third-consecutive day, Saint Joseph's College (3-5) split a pair of contests in THE Spring Games action. The Monks opened with a 5-0 triumph over Chatham University (1-6) and fell on the wrong side of a comeback effort in a 13-5 loss to Ohio Northern University (5-3) on Wednesday afternoon.

SAINT JOSEPH'S def. CHATHAM, 5-0

After three scoreless innings the Monks broke through with two runs off four hits in the top of the fourth, when freshman first baseman Olivia Howe (Saco, Maine) and junior Megan Eagleston (Reading, Mass.) delivered RBI singles. St. Joe's added two more runs off two hits and a pair of Chatham errors in the sixth, when Howe singled and later scored on an error and senior third baseman Kaylee Burns (Saco, Maine) knocked in classmate Maizie Lee (Saco, Maine) with a sac fly.

In the top of the seventh, senior second baseman Libby Pomerleau (Limerick, Maine) singled and later scored on a base hit off the bat of freshman shortstop Lauren Leidemann-Smith (South Berwick, Maine).

Freshman starter Emily Eagleston (Reading, Mass.) earned her first collegiate victory after scattering four hits with three K's over five shutout innings. Senior Caitlyn King (Old Town, Maine) finished the game with a strikeout in two perfect frames of relief.

Howe was 2-4 with two runs and an RBI, Lee went 2-4 with a run, and junior center fielder Meranda Martin (Richmond, Maine) was 2-3 with a run and a pair of stolen bases in the victory.

Chatham starter Julie Swedberg falls to 1-3 on the young season after giving up five runs (four earned) off nine hits with three punch-outs in seven innings.

OHIO NORTHERN def. SAINT JOSEPH'S, 13-5

The Monks were in prime position to post their first sweep of the trip with a 5-1 lead through four innings, but the Polar Bears had other ideas as they put on an offensive display to the tune of 12 unanswered runs off 13 hits in the closing three innings to claim a 13-5 cushion. Senior catcher Gabby Stewart accounted for five runs on two swings with a game-tying three-run homer in the sixth and a two-run jack in the seventh. Ohio-Northern broke free of a 5-5 stalemate with eight runs off nine hits in the seventh inning alone.

Martin, Leidemann-Smith, and Madisyn Charest (Sidney, Maine) registered two hits apiece for the Monks while King suffered the loss after allowing six runs on five hits and two walks in 0.2 innings. Senior starter Kate Whitney (Jonesboro, Maine) pitched well and allowed two runs off 10 hits with four K's in five innings. Ohio-Northern sophomore starter Kaitlyn Hagarty improves to 2-1 after giving up five runs on nine hits and two walks over seven frames.
