Saint Joseph’s Falls to Colby, 65-53

STANDISH, Maine – Colby College (7-0) employed a perfect 16-16 effort from the free throw line in a 65-53 victory over Saint Joseph's College (5-2) at the Harold Alfond Center on Wednesday evening. Junior center Morgan Cahill (Yarmouth, Maine) netted a game-high 22 points in the losing effort.

Leading 12-8 with 14:39 left in the first half, Colby scored six unanswered points to obtain a double-digit lead for the first time and proceeded to hold at least a 10-point cushion for the vast majority of play.

The Mules led 38-23 at halftime and quickly extended their lead to a game-high 20 points when junior guard Carylanne Wolfington (Hampden, Maine) netted five unanswered points in the opening minute of the second stanza.

The Monks managed to rally late with six straight points, as three-pointers by sophomore guards Abbie Eastman (Norway, Maine) and Emily Kehoe (Perkinsville, Vt.) cut the hosts' deficit to 60-49 with 2:07 remaining. But Saint Joseph's would get no closer, as Wolfington hit a three-pointer on the Mules' following possession to cease any momentum gained by the hosts.

Saint Joseph's shot 40.7% (22-54) from the field, 37.5% (3-8) from three-point distance, and 66.7% (6-9) from the FT line while Colby shot 42.9% (21-49) from the field, 35% (7-20) from downtown and, as previously mentioned, 100% (16-16) from the charity stripe on the evening.

For the Monks, senior guard Sarah Assante (Standish, Maine) tallied 11 points, six assists, four rebounds, three steals and a pair of blocks, Kehoe added seven points, and freshman forward Norma Waggett (Saugus, Mass.) chipped in with five points and four caroms off the bench.

For the Mules, junior guard Mia Diplock (Vienna, Maine) scored 13 with six steals and three assists, senior forward Kate Parsons (Hampden, Maine) contributed 12 points while shooting 6-6 from the stripe, and sophomore guard Caitlyn Nolan (Barrington, R.I.) added seven points in the victory.

With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 10-13 all-time versus Colby College, a team the Monks defeated by a 67-63 score in Waterville last winter.

Saint Joseph's closes out the first semester on Sunday with a home contest versus Maine-Fort Kent at 1:00 PM while Colby hosts Bowdoin College at 2:00 PM on Saturday.
