Monks Topple Lasers, 64-34

NEWTON, Mass. – Saint Joseph's College (11-3, 2-0 GNAC) routed Lasell College (8-7, 1-2 GNAC), 64-34, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's basketball action on Saturday afternoon. Senior center Morgan Cahill (Yarmouth, Maine) registered the 31st double-double of her career with 20 points and 15 boards in the convincing victory.

THE LEAD

The Monks led from wire to wire in the conference contest and all but put the game away by outscoring the Lasers by an 18-7 margin in the second quarter as the visitors carried a 28-14 cushion into intermission.

St. Joe's claimed a game-high 35-point advantage when sophomore guard Emily Quirion (Augusta, Maine) and freshman guard Hannah Marks (Waldoboro, Maine) drained three-pointers on consecutive possessions to push the Monks to a 60-25 lead with 4:09 remaining.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S

  • Freshman guard Kelsi McNamara (West Newbury, Mass.) tallied 10 points, four assists and three steals
  • Sophomore forward Norma Waggett (Saugus, Mass.) netted 10 points with six rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench
  • Freshman forward Emily Benway (Rochester, N.H.) pulled down nine rebounds
  • Quirion contributed six points and four boards
  • Marks chipped in with six points and a pair of caroms

LEADERS – LASELL

  • Katie Stopera (Hollis, N.H.) totaled six points, nine rebounds and two assists
  • Deanna Barrett (Berlin, Conn.) added six points and five boards
  • Sherilyn Small (Springfield, Mass.) chipped in with six points and three caroms

TEAM STATS

Saint Joseph's shot 32.9% (24-73) from the floor, 25% (5-20) from three-point distance and 68.8% (11-16) from the free throw line while Lasell posted efforts of 23.3% (14-60), 13.6% (3-22) and 60% (3-5) from the field, three-point range and the FT line, respectively, on the afternoon.

St. Joe's held advantages in rebounds (57-42), assists (11-9), steals (12-2), turnovers (10-18), points off turnovers (16-5), points in the paint (32-14), second-chance points (20-4) and bench points (25-15) in the victory.

NOTEWORTHY

All 16 of the Monks' healthy players logged time in today's victory…Cahill, who entered the game with 299 free throws made, went 4-4 from the FT line and became the fourth player in program history to make at least 300 career freebies…the game started 25 minutes late as Saint Joseph's was delayed due to difficult travel conditions.

Saint Joseph's hosts Suffolk University (9-6, 1-1 GNAC) at 1:00 PM on Monday while Lasell faces off against Norwich University (9-7, 2-2 GNAC) at home on Tuesday at 5:30 PM.
