Monks Top Mariners in Season-Opener, 64-48

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (1-0) defeated Maine Maritime Academy (0-1), 64-48, in non-conference women's basketball action at the Harold Alfond Center on Tuesday evening. The contest was the 2016-17 season-opener for both teams.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Monks pulled away several times with scoring spurts in the first three quarters, but could not completely shake the pesky Mariners until putting up a 14-4 run - spanning the closing three minutes of the third period and the opening three ticks of the fourth – en route to claiming a 60-43 cushion with 7:25 left.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Sophomore Kelsi McNamara (West Newbury, Mass.) scored a game-high 17 points with nine assists with the help of a 7-8 free-throw shooting effort
  • Sophomore Hannah Marks (Waldoboro, Maine) came off the bench to score 13 points with seven rebounds
  • Senior Abbie Eastman (Norway, Maine) netted nine points with three steals
  • Junior Regan McFerran (Albany, N.Y.) chipped in with nine points and a game-high eight rebounds
  • Junior Brianne Maloney (South Portland, Maine) added seven points with three caroms

LEADERS – MAINE MARITIME:

  • Sophomore Alayne Felix (Mahopac, N.Y.) paced the visitors with 12 points
  • Senior Kristi Willey (Topsham, Maine) contributed eight points, four boards, and two assists
  • Junior Caitlin Kane (Wilton, Maine) added seven points, five assists, and three rebounds

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING

With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 9-4 all-time versus Maine Maritime Academy, a team the Monks defeated by a 75-55 margin in Castine last season (11/21)…Saint Joseph's has now won six-consecutive season-openers.
