STANDISH, Maine - #12/14 Saint Joseph's College (10-0) toppled UMaine-Farmington (2-8), 92-48, in a non-conference women's basketball game at the Harold Alfond Center on Thursday night.
THE LEAD:
Senior forward Emily Benway (Rochester, N.H.) led a group of six Monks in double-digits with 18 points and 10 rebounds (nine offensive) – in just 16 minutes on the floor – to help St. Joe's improve to 10-0 for the first time since the 1998-99 team started off with 13 straight wins.
THE REST OF THE STORY:
Leading 13-9 with 4:39 left in the first quarter, freshman guard Grace Philippon (Glenburn, Maine) connected on a layup to kick off a 15-5 run that saw the hosts carry a 28-14 cushion into the second stanza.
Saint Joseph's went on to lead by double digits for the remainder of the contest and held a game-high 44-point (90-46) advantage after freshman guard Sophie Giardina (Bradenton, Fla.) made a layup with 2:30 to play in the fourth frame.
STATS OF THE GAME:
Saint Joseph's scored 23 points off 22 UMF turnovers and coughed the ball up just 10 times on the evening…The Monks held a 52-24 lead in points in the paint and tallied 26 assists on 38 field goals…St. Joe's received 37 points from the bench while UMaine-Farmington's bench contributed 11 points…SJC posted a 49.4% (38-77) shooting performance with a 10-28 (35.7%) effort from three-point distance…The Beavers attempted just four trifectas, making two, in the loss.
LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:
- Benway was 8-15 from the field and 2-2 from the charity stripe en route to posted her fourth double-double of the season and 19th of her NCAA career
- Senior guard Kelsi McNamara (West Newbury, Mass.) tallied 14 points, six assists, three rebounds, and three steals and was 6-10 from the floor
- Senior guard Julia Champagne (Brunswick, Maine) added 11 points, four assists, and a pair of steals
- Senior guard Hannah Marks (Waldoboro, Maine) chipped in with 10 points and six boards
- Freshman forward Page Brown (Boothbay, Maine) was 5-5 from the field with 10 points and four caroms
- Philippon finished the evening with 10 points and four rebounds
LEADERS – UMAINE-FARMINGTON:
- Sophomore forward McKenna Brodeur (Oakland, Maine) paced the Beavers with 12 points and added four rebounds and a pair of steals
- Senior forward Paige Carter (South Portland, Maine) pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds and swatted four shots with four points
- Senior guard Morgan Crocker (Boothbay, Maine) netted nine points with two assists and two boards
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 43-29 in the history of the series with UMaine-Farmington and has now defeated the Beavers in nine-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2010-11 campaign. The last time the Monks scored as many as 92 points versus UMF took place on February 23rd, 1995 when SJC won a 103-80 shootout in Farmington.

Saint Joseph's is off until Saturday, December 29th when the team plays the first of two games in California. The Monks will play at Pomona-Pitzer on the 29th and take on Occidental the following day. Both games are slated to start at 4:00 PM EST.
