Champagne Joins 1,000-Point Club

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College senior guard Julia Champagne (Brunswick, Maine) became the 25th member of the Monks' 1000-Point Club in a 79-69 triumph over Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) rival Emmanuel College at the Harold Alfond Center on Tuesday night.

Champagne entered the rivalry matchup nine points shy of the milestone and hit the mark on the nose with a layup at the 6:25 mark of the second quarter. Senior guard Kelsi McNamara (West Newbury, Mass.) was credited with an assist on Champagne's 1,000th point field goal.

Following the play, Head Coach Mike McDevitt '83 promptly called for a timeout and the Saint Joseph's scorer's table acknowledged the achievement with a brief public address announcement.

Champagne joins a pair of classmates – McNamara and Emily Benway (Rochester, N.H.) – in the SJC 1,000-Point Club, marking the first time in program history that three members of the same graduating class have netted 1,000 or more career points.

McNamara, the program's all-time scoring leader, reached the mark last season and currently has 1,905 points while Benway has netted 1,208 points during her collegiate career.

Champagne, Benway, McNamara and Hannah Marks (Waldoboro, Maine) have combined to score 5,012 points during their NCAA careers, the most scored by a senior class in program history, surpassing the total of 4,027 netted by the 1995 class (Bouchard, Treadwell, Clark, Joler).

Champagne finished the game with 11 points, three rebounds, and three steals. In 110 career games – including 81 starts – Champagne has scored 1,002 points with 527 rebounds, 243 assists, and 148 steals. She is a 43.9% (335-763) career shooter from the floor with a 34.4% (111-323) effort from downtown and a 73.2% (22-302) mark from the FT line.

As of February 8th, Champagne is 10th in team history in three-point percentage and 11th in both three-pointers made (111) and attempted (323).

So far this season Champagne is averaging 13.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game while shooting 45.2% (100-221) from the floor, 34.5% (38-110) from three-point distance, and 69.9% (51-73) from the charity stripe.

Champagne is the 21st player to join the 1,000-Point Club during McDevitt's 26-year tenure at Saint Joseph's and one of just eight players to reach the milestone since 2004.
