FARMINGTON, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (3-2) defeated UMaine-Farmington (2-3), 80-60, in a non-conference women's basketball contest on Tuesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Monks held a 37-27 advantage after senior guard Julia Quinn (Fryeburg, Maine) hit a three pointer with 2:23 left in the first half, but the Beavers rallied with eight unanswered points as an Alex Bessey (Jay, Maine) trifecta cut the visitors' advantage down to two points heading into intermission.
UMF netted six straight points midway through the third quarter to make it a 46-45 game, but SJC responded in kind with seven consecutive points. Freshman forward Jayne Howe (Pembroke, Mass.) made a layup to cap the burst and extend her team's lead to 53-45 with 2:08 left in the penultimate period.
The Monks proceeded to lead by at least seven points for the remainder of the contest and held a game-high 14-point (66-52) cushion after Howe closed out a 10-3 surge with a jumper with 6:11 left.
A dominant fourth quarter put the game away for the Monks, as the Royal Blue shot 50% (9-18) from the floor while the hosts posted a 25% (2-8) effort with seven turnovers in the closing 10 minutes of play.
STATS OF THE GAME:
Saint Joseph's shot 56.1% (32-57) overall with a 43.5% (10-23) clip from downtown while UMaine-Farmington posted a 38.2% (21-55) effort from the field and a 29.4% (5-17) success rate from beyond the arc…The Monks' bench accounted for 30 points while the Beavers' nine subs combined to score 16 in a losing effort.
LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:
- Junior guard Cassandra Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) was 8-for-11 from the field and scored 20 points with six rebounds and four assists
- Sophomore guard Alyson Fillion (Bedford, N.H.) added 16 points with a pair of boards
- Howe came off the bench to score 16 points with four assists and three steals
- Freshman Bri Jordan (Gray, Maine) tallied 12 points and six rebounds
- Junior guard Jordan Jabar (Waterville, Maine) added six points, five rebounds, five assists, two steals, and a pair of blocked shots
- Quinn contributed eight points
LEADERS – UMAINE-FARMINGTON:
- Bessey led the Beavers with 11 points and added two assists and two steals
- Sophomore forward Page Brown (Boothbay, Maine) scored 10 points and pulled down three boards
- Junior forward McKenna Brodeur (Oakland, Maine) added 10 points, five rebounds, two assists, and a pair of steals
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 44-29 in the history of the series with UMaine-Farmington and has now defeated the Beavers in 10-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2010-11 campaign.
