Mariners Tip Monks in Overtime, 71-68

CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy (7-3) defeated Saint Joseph's College (5-4), 71-68, in overtime in a non-conference women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks held a 57-50 lead heading into the fourth quarter but fell short after shooting just 14.3% (3-21) from the field in the final frame and overtime period combined. Up 62-57 with 4:57 remaining in regulation, Saint Joseph's went 0-4 from the floor and committed five turnovers while the Mariners netted five points and tied the game when Melinda Ogden (Searsport, Maine) hit a three-pointer with five seconds on the clock.

The Mariners registered their first lead since midway through the second quarter when Lauren Plissey (Hermon, Maine) made a layup on their first overtime possession. Senior Julia Quinn (Fryeburg, Maine) connected on a pair of free throws to knot the game at 64-64 with 3:23 left in OT, but Maine Maritime rattled off seven unanswered points to take the lead for good.

TEAM STATS:

The Mariners shot 43.3% (26-60) from the floor while the Monks posted a 30.6% (22-72) effort from the field…Maine Maritime held a 36-18 lead in points in the paint.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Quinn led all scorers with a career-high 18 points and was 4-for-9 from three-point range
  • Junior guard Cassandra Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) scored 16 points with four rebounds and a pair of assists
  • Sophomore guard Alyson Fillion (Bedford, N.H.) added 14 points, three boards, and three assists
  • Senior forward Lexi L'Heureux-Carland (Bridgton, Maine) chipped in with 11 boards and six points

LEADERS – MAINE MARITIME:

  • Plissey tallied 17 points, eight rebounds, three blocked shots, two assists and a pair of steals
  • Maureen Stanton (Abington, Mass.) contributed 16 points, seven boards, six assists and a pair of steals
  • Samantha Mason (Lamoine, Maine) added 12 points, four rebounds and four assists

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

Saint Joseph's is now 12-5 all-time versus Maine Maritime Academy and, after defeating the Mariners in eight-consecutive meetings, falls to the Mariners for the first time since 2007.

For the Monks, the loss in overtime is the team's first since falling to Occidental, 66-64, in OT on December 31st, 2014. In the interim, St. Joe's won four-consecutive games that ended in overtime.

Saint Joseph's has a quick turnaround with a 12:00 PM non-conference contest at Thomas College tomorrow. Maine Maritime returns to action in 2020 when they travel to Norwich University on Sunday, January 5 for a 2:00 PM non-conference matchup.
