Southern Maine Upends Saint Joseph’s 19-4

PORTLAND, Maine -- Junior Jessica Knight (Alfred, ME) scored a game-high five goals as the University of Southern Maine defeated Saint Joseph's College, 19-4, in a non-conference women's lacrosse game Tuesday evening at Memorial Field.

The win lifts the Huskies to 3-2 overall. The Lady Monks dropped their second straight game to slip back to .500 at 2-2.

For Saint Joseph's, sophomore Lizzie Farley (Scarborough, ME) and juniors Vanessa Brooks (Bath, ME), Jaimee Brett (Otisfield, ME) and Lauren Hagerman (Scarborough, ME) each scored a goal. Freshman goalie Taylor Allison (Pawtucket, RI) made 15 saves.

The Huskies had a balanced offense as eight different players scored goals. Senior Caitlin Albert (Scarborough, ME) had three goals and two assists for a five-point night. Freshman Sarah Bonenfant (Scarborough, ME) contributed two goals and two assists while sophomores Mary Vaughan (Brunswick, ME) and Kelsey Inzer (Randolph, VT) each had two goals and one assist. Sophomore goalie Rachel Lolley (Gorham, ME) registered 10 saves.

Southern Maine received goals from four different players in the opening seven minutes to take charge. Brett got St. Joe's on the board with 21:02 remaining, but USM responded by scoring seven consecutive goals over a 15-minute span to open an 11-1 lead. Knight had three of the goals. Goals by Farley and Hagerman in the final five minutes closed the gap to 11-3 at halftime.

The Huskies put the game away scoring the first seven goals of the second half.

Southern Maine returns to Hodgdon Field in Gorham on Thursday (4:00 p.m.) when Castleton State College comes to town. Saint Joseph's will host Husson University Wednesday night (7:15 p.m.) at Memorial Field in Portland.
