Monks Outrun Beavers in Opener, 15-7

PORTLAND, ME – The Saint Joseph’s Women’s Lacrosse team opened the 2010 season with a 15-7 victory over University of Maine-Farmington at Memorial Stadium on Tuesday evening. Alyssa Marchant ’11 (Wakefield, MA) scored six goals for the Monks and keeper Taylor Allison ’12 (Pawtucket, RI) made 17 stops in the victory.

Lauren Hagerman ’10 (Scarborough, ME) tallied three goals and four assists for seven total points, while Amelia Santos ’12 (Beverly, MA) added two goals and an assist and Erika Waterhouse ’13 (South Portland, ME) chipped in with a pair of tallies in the SJC triumph.

The first half was a low-scoring period, as the Royal Blue carried a 6-3 lead into the intermission. The Beavers netted three consecutive goals to start second stanza, tying the game at six apiece, but Saint Joseph’s responded by outscoring the visitors by a 9-1 margin over the final 20 minutes, including seven straight to close out the game.

Marchant opened the game scoring with a free-position goal just 30 seconds into play and doubled the Monks’ lead with a marker three minutes later.

The Beavers got on the board when Ashley Roderigue ’11 (Belgrade, ME) beat Allison on a free-position attempt at the 21:51 mark. The Monks answered with three unanswered scores, as Santos netted her first two tallies of the year and Emily Wight ’13 (Westbrook, ME) registered her first collegiate goal, on a free-position bid, with 8:58 remaining in the first half.

UMF goals by Kara Hudson ’10 (Wells, ME) and Lucy Sargent ’10 (York, ME) sandwiched Waterhouse’s first NCAA goal, a man-up goal scored at the 4:21 mark off a Jaimee Brett ’10 (Otisfield, ME) pass, and capped the half scoring.

Amie Daniels ’12 (Lewiston, ME) scored twice and Sargent added her second goal in the first nine minutes of the second period to tie the game, 6-6. Marchant answered the challenge with two scores over the subsequent four minutes to put the Monks back ahead by two with 17:16 remaining.

Beavers attacker Jessica Allen ’10 (Mexico, ME) scored a free-position goal at the 16:08 mark to cut the UMF deficit to one goal, but the SJC offense proceeded to put the game away with seven unanswered markers. Hagerman tallied three goals and three assists and Marchant added two of her game-high six markers during the surge.

For the Monks, Lizzie Farley ’11 (Scarborough, ME) added a goal and Brett notched a pair of assists. Santos collected a game-high eight groundballs while Allison corralled eight groundballs in the win.

For the Beavers, keeper Andrea Knox ’11 (North Waterboro, ME) made 14 stops between the pipes, while Sargent and Daniels both scored two goals in the losing effort.

St. Joe’s held an advantage over Farmington in shots (39-33), groundballs (40-25) and saves (17-14), while Farmington proved to be more efficient in clearing attempts (14-15 vs. 17-22), turnovers (6-10) and draw controls (15-10).

The Monks came close to setting new single game records in several categories in the triumph. The groundball total ranks second, the save tally is tied for third and the shots mark is third in team history.

Saint Joseph’s will host GNAC rival Pine Manor College at Fitzpatrick Stadium on Saturday at 3:00 PM, while UMF will play at USM on Thursday at 4:00 PM.
