Monks and Eagles Play to 15-15 Tie

BANGOR, ME – Saint Joseph’s College (3-0-1) and Husson University (1-0-1) dueled to a 15-15 stalemate in a non-conference women’s lacrosse contest on a snowy Wednesday night. Alyssa Marchant ’11 (Wakefield, MA) led the Monks with four goals in the deadlock.

Shelby Bradford ’10 (Lee, ME) netted 6 goals and 1 assist for Husson, including the game-tying goal with just under a minute left in the overtime frame. The tie is the first in the short history of both programs.

Vanessa Brooks ’10 (Bath, ME) got the Monks on the board first with an unassisted goal.  The game was tied at 5-5 with 20:43 left in the first period when St. Joseph’s midfielder Lauren Hagerman ‘10 (Scarborough, ME) scored.  Husson’s Caitlyn Butterfield ’11 (Gorham, ME) would answer with a goal of her own to reclaim the Eagle lead at 6-5.  Despite driving snow, both teams battled to end the first half at 11-7 with Husson in the lead.

Brooks opened the second half for the Monks with an immediate goal.  Saint Joseph’s would score 7 goals in the second half to Husson’s 3.  With 57 seconds left on the clock, Marchant tied the game at 14 with a Saint Joseph’s goal.

Due to impending darkness, both teams agreed to play a single three minute overtime period. Marchant hit another late game goal to give the Monks a 15-14 lead 47 seconds into overtime.  With 59.1 seconds left in the game, Husson’s Shelby Bradford picked up a defensive ground ball and carried the ball the length of the field for the clear.  Bradford then scored an unassisted goal to knot the game at 15.  The game would end in a 15-15 tie following the end of overtime.

Taylor Allison ’12 (Pawtucket, RI) made seven stops in goal for the Monks, while counterpart Kristen Capen ’13 (Leeds, ME) registered six saves for the Eagles.

Saint Joseph’s returns to action on March 26 against Mount Ida, while the Eagles return to action on Saturday, March 27 at Framingham State.
