Monks Rally Past Eagles, 13-8

PORTLAND, ME – Saint Joseph's improved to 3-0 with a 13-8 victory over Husson University (3-2, 1-0 NAC) at Deering Memorial Stadium on Monday evening. Monks netminder Taylor Allison '12 (Pawtucket, RI) recorded 13 saves in the win.

St. Joe's trailed 5-4 at the break and managed to score four straight goals, including a pair by freshman Cassie Diplock (Augusta, ME), in the opening 10 minutes of the second half to secure an 8-5 advantage and change the complexion of the contest.

The Eagles cut their deficit to 8-6 when Megan Clement '11 (Brunswick, ME) steered a shot past Allison with 18:04 remaining, but the Monks rattled off four unanswered markers over the next eight minutes and led 12-6 after Alyssa Marchant '11 (Wakefield, MA) netted a free-position goal at the 10:33 mark.

Marchant paced the Royal Blue with five goals and added five draw controls and three ground balls in the win. Diplock scored three goals and collected five ground balls, Erika Waterhouse '13 (South Portland, ME) added two goals and an assist, Amelia Santos '12 (Beverly, MA) tallied a goal and three assists, and Anneka Adame '14 (San Diego, CA) added a goal with seven ground balls, three caused turnovers and a game-high nine draw controls.

Megan Cutter '12 (Westbrook, ME) chipped in with a goal and Danielle Cusack '13 (Portland, ME/Deering) corralled seven ground balls in the triumph.

For Husson, Clement netted five goals, Michelle Rancourt '13 (Lewiston, ME) added two goals and an assist, and Alex Huffman '11 (North Hampton, NH) registered seven ground balls and six draw controls.

Eagles keeper Kaleigh Morneau '13 (Twin Mountain, NH) recorded 12 saves in a losing effort.

Saint Joseph's held advantages in shots (33-29), ground balls (38-31) and draw controls (14-9) on the night. The Monks were 2-6 on free-position attempts while the Eagles went 0-5 on their bids after infractions.

With the result, St. Joe's improves to 2-0-1 in the history of the series with Husson.

Saint Joseph's will play at Simmons College on Wednesday at 7:00 PM in the Monks' 2011 Great Northeast Athletic Conference opener while Husson is set to host Colby College on Wednesday at 4:30 PM.
