GORHAM, ME – University of Southern Maine (3-8) defeated Saint Joseph's (3-5), 14-8, in a non-conference women's lacrosse contest on Tuesday afternoon. Cassie Diplock '14 (Augusta, ME) registered four goals and an assist in the losing effort.
Sophomores Shelby Turcotte (Lewiston, Maine) and Lauren Santo (Salem, N.H.) each scored four goals to lead Huskies to victory, which snapped a two-game losing skid for the hosts. The Monks have now dropped five straight.
Aiding Turcotte and Santo were senior Mary Vaughan (Brunswick, Maine/Pomfret School) who had two goals and two assists, and rookie Rosie Forster (Andover, Mass.) who tallied a pair of goals. Sophomore goalie Samantha Kiesel (Lakeville, Mass./Kents Hill) registered 14 saves to earn her second win of the season.
For the Monks, junior Amelia Santos (Beverly, Mass.) chipped in two goals and two assists and junior Taylor Allison (Pawtucket, R.I.) stopped 12 shots in the Monks' cage.
Diplock gave the visitors their only lead of the game scoring her first marker 12 seconds into the match. The advantage lasted less than minute as Santo converted a free-position attempt to spark a run of four consecutive USM goals. Santo and Turcotte did the honors as each scored twice.
The Monks got back to within two (5-3) on a goal from sophomore Erika Waterhouse (South Portland, Maine) midway through the opening half. The Huskies responded with five straight scores over the final 15 minutes to take a 10-3 lead into halftime. Turcotte and Vaughan scored twice, and Santo tallied once. Kiesel made a big difference in the first 30 minutes making nine saves.
In the second half, the Monks never got closer than five, the last time at 13-8 on Santos' second goal with 7:32 to play. USM sophomore Katie Grenier (Oakland, Maine/Messalonskee) closed out the scoring with her first goal.
Southern Maine hits the road this Saturday (12:00 p.m.) traveling to Western Connecticut State University for a Little East Conference match. Saint Joseph's is right back at it tomorrow night (7:00 p.m.) traveling to Emmanuel College.
