PORTLAND, ME – Saint Joseph's (5-6, 2-5 GNAC) defeated St. Joseph (CT) (4-9, 0-7 GNAC), 15-2, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's lacrosse tilt at Fitzpatrick Stadium on Wednesday evening. Alyssa Marchant '11 (Wakefield, MA) netted five goals in the triumph.
Leading 2-1 after 10 minutes of play, St. Joe's scored 11 unanswered goals to secure a 13-1 cushion heading into the break. The Monks continued the run with the first two scores in the second half before the Blue Jays found the back of the cage near the end of the half to make the final score 15-2.
Prior to the start of the game a ceremony was held to honor Marchant, the program's lone senior this spring. The four-year starter scored the first goal in SJC women's lacrosse history and is the program's all-time leader in goals, points, ground balls and caused turnovers.
Marchant proceeded to make her final home contest even more memorable by becoming the first player in team history to reach the 200-goal mark. The senior's fourth goal of the game, a score off an Amelia Santos '12 (Beverly, MA) dish at the 9:54 mark of the first half, was the 200th of her career.
For the Monks, Santos tallied two goals and four assists, Megan Cutter '12 (Westbrook, ME) added two goals and a helper and Cassie Diplock '14 (Augusta, ME) netted a pair of markers. Anneka Adame '14 (San Diego, CA) corralled eight draw controls and Emily Wight '13 (Westbrook, ME) contributed seven ground balls and two caused turnovers in the win.
SJC starting goalkeeper Taylor Allison '12 (Pawtucket, RI) made five stops in the first half while Haley Nason '14 (Saco, ME) recorded one stop in the cage in the second stanza.
Blue Jays netminder Stacey Velasquez made six saves in a losing effort.
Saint Joseph's held advantages in shots (25-13), ground balls (28-17) and draw controls (11-7) in the conference triumph.
With the win, St. Joe's improves to 4-0 in the history of the series with St. Joseph (CT).
The Monks will close out the regular season with a game at Norwich University on Saturday at 1:00 PM. The Blue Jays will host Emerson College on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
