PORTLAND, ME – Saint Joseph's College (10-6, 8-1 GNAC) toppled University of Maine-Farmington (4-8, 1-3 NAC), 13-3, in a non-conference women's lacrosse contest at Deering Memorial Stadium on Thursday night. Senior midfielder Cassie Diplock (Augusta, Maine) netted four goals in the victory.
The Monks scored 10 unanswered goals in the first half as seven different players found the back of the net to provide the hosts with a double-digit lead after the opening 30 minutes.
Senior Anneka Adame (San Diego, Calif.) scored 11 seconds into the second half and sophomore Mary Leasure (South Portland, Maine/McAuley) potted her second marker of the night nearly 10 minutes later to stake the Monks to a 12-0 advantage. The Beavers finally got on the board with three straight goals, starting with a Maddi Kadnar (Belgrade, Maine) tally at the 17:10 mark.
For the Monks, Leasure recorded two goals and an assist with seven ground balls while Adame and senior Krystal Walsh (Springvale, Maine) both scored twice in the triumph. Junior Lizzie Calnan (Westport, Mass.) added a goal and an assist along with four caused turnovers, Kat Gadbois (Scarborough, Maine) scored and corralled a game-high eight ground balls, and Meghan Williams (Greenland, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas) rounded out the SJC goal scorers. Freshman goalie Emma Astbury (Bridgewater, Vt.) made seven saves to collect her second-consecutive victory and senior Rachelle Messuri (Atkinson, N.H.) tallied seven ground balls with four caused turnovers on the night.
Kadnar, Rhi Jackson (Saco, Maine) and Ayla Allen (Rumford, Maine) accounted for the three UMF markers. Jackson added six ground balls and six caused turnovers while senior keeper Hannah Goodenow (Freeport, Maine) made 16 stops in a losing effort.
With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 4-1 in the history of the series with University of Maine-Farmington. The Monks have notched at least 10 victories in consecutive seasons for the first time in team history. The double-digit win total is the third in the seven-year history of the program.
Saint Joseph's concludes the regular season with a 4:00 PM conference contest versus Simmons College at Deering Memorial Stadium on Saturday. Maine-Farmington also closes out the 2014 campaign with a conference tilt on Saturday, as the Beavers host Colby-Sawyer College in a 10:00 AM start at Kents Hill School.
