Saint Joseph's Defeats Maine Maritime, 21-1

PORTLAND, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (2-1) defeated Maine Maritime Academy (0-1), 21-1, in a non-conference women's lacrosse contest at Deering Memorial Stadium on Monday evening. The game served as the first-ever NCAA women's lacrosse game in Maine Maritime Academy history, as well as the first home game for the Mariners who served as the hosts of the matchup.

The Monks scored twice in the opening minute and held a 7-0 lead after freshman attack Elyse Caiazzo (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) netted her second of a game-high four goals with 20:33 left in the first half. Saint Joseph's headed into intermission with a 15-0 lead and opened the second stanza with four unanswered goals en route to securing the 21-1 triumph over the first-year program.

Rachel Redles (Walkersville, Md.) recorded the first goal in Maine Maritime women's lacrosse history with 13:15 remaining in the game.

In all, 11 different players found the back of the cage in the triumph as junior Mary Leasure (South Portland, Maine/McAuley) recorded three goals and four assists, sophomore Kelsey Dumond (Lewiston, Maine) netted three goals with a pair of assists, and junior Elizabeth Elcock (Westwood, Mass.) potted three goals with an assist to lead the offensive attack. Junior Kat Gadbois (Scarborough, Maine) played an all around game with two goals, three assists, seven ground balls, seven draw controls and five caused turnovers in the victory.

Seniors Lizzie Calnan (Westport, Mass.) and Doe Leckie (Naples, Maine), juniors Meghan Williams (Greenland, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas), Emma Lafrance (Westport, Mass.) and Chelsea Bordeau (Rumford, Maine) and sophomore Jackie Wilson (Tiverton, R.I.) netted single goals in the lopsided win.

Junior goalkeeper Michelle Cunha (Enfield, Conn.) made one save for the Monks while Ashlee Knight (Anson, Maine) recorded seven saves in net for the Mariners.

Saint Joseph's returns to action Wednesday with a 5:00 PM game versus Southern Maine at Deering Memorial Stadium. Maine Maritime will hit the road for the Inaugural Maritime Cup in Throggs Neck, N.Y. where they take on SUNY Maritime on Friday, March 13 and Massachusetts Maritime on Saturday, March 14.
