Monks Topple Falcons, Win Eighth Consecutive Game

PORTLAND, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (8-1, 5-0 GNAC) skated past Albertus Magnus (1-11, 0-6 GNAC), 20-3, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's lacrosse contest at Deering Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Monks extended their team-record winning streak to eight games with the lopsided triumph.

Saint Joseph's played poorly in the opening minutes of the conference contest and trailed 1-0 after Albertus freshman attack Jenny Luna (Brentwood, N.Y.) scored off a Sogona Sacko (New York, N.Y.) pass at the 27:02 mark of the first half. The early deficit proved to be a wakeup call for the Monks, who remain undefeated in GNAC play, as the Royal Blue took control of the game with three goals in the following two minutes, including a pair from junior Elizabeth Elcock (Westwood, Mass.). The quick trio of markers was the start of an 18-0 run, which ended with a Meghan Williams (Greenland, N.H./St. Thomas Aquinas) goal with 14:00 minutes left in the second stanza.

In total, 11 different SJC players scored in the victory, a group that was led by Elcock, who netted four goals, and freshman Elyse Caiazzo (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus), who tallied three goals and three assists on the afternoon. Senior Lizzie Calnan (Westport, Mass.) registered two goals and three assists along with three ground balls and four caused turnovers, junior Kat Gadbois (Scarborough, Maine) contributed two goals and a pair of assists along with a game-high six ground balls and three caused turnovers, and junior Mary Leasure (South Portland, Maine/McAuley) added two tallies and an assist on the afternoon.

Williams and freshman Courtney Trufant (South Portland, Maine) posted a goal and an assist apiece while sophomore Jackie Wilson (Tiverton, R.I.) added a marker and freshmen Karissa Boesch (Eliot, Maine) and Brianne Maloney (South Portland, Maine) both netted their first collegiate goals in the victory. Sophomore goalie Meghan Fullarton (Windham, Maine) made one save and improved to 3-0 on the season.

Luna scored two of the Falcons' three goals in the loss while freshman midfielder Nikki Kern (Wallingford, Conn.) tallied a goal and an assist with eight draw controls and four ground balls in the setback. Junior goalkeeper Maria Case (West Haven, Conn.) recorded 14 saves for the visitors.

Saint Joseph's will play at Emmanuel College in a rematch of the 2014 GNAC Championship on Monday at 7:00 PM. Albertus Magnus is off until next Saturday when the team hosts Emmanuel at 12:00 PM.
