PORTLAND, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (2-1) defeated UMass.-Dartmouth (1-2), 11-7, in a non-conference women's lacrosse contest at Deering Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Saint Joseph's maintained an advantage for the first 35 minutes of play before UMass.-Dartmouth netted three goals in a matter of 130 seconds to knot the game at 7-7 with 24 minutes remaining.

Following a timeout by Saint Joseph's, sophomore midfielder Elyse Caiazzo (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) scored the eventual game-winner on a free-position shot at the 22:33 mark. The Monks proceeded to net three insurance markers – including a pair from senior Kat Gadbois (Scarborough, Maine) – over the remainder of the contest to clinch the 11-7 victory.

  • Senior goalkeeper Michelle Cunha (Enfield, Conn.) made 11 saves in the victory

LEADERS – UMASS.-DARTMOUTH

  • Sophomore midfielder Leah Douty (Framingham, Mass.) produced three goals with an assist, four ground balls, and three caused turnovers
  • Freshman goalie Kaitlyn Burchill (Bridgewater, Mass.) recorded 12 saves

TEAM STATS

The Monks held the lead in shots (28-22), ground balls (23-11), and draw controls (14-7) and was successful on 10 of 13 clear attempts on the afternoon. The Corsairs successfully cleared the ball out of their end on six of 16 bids and held an 11-20 turnovers advantage in the losing effort.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING

Saint Joseph's is now 2-0 all-time versus UMass.-Dartmouth, a team the Monks defeated by a 13-6 margin last spring (4/12/15).
