STANDISH, Maine – The 2017 Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Zag Sports Division III Academic Honor Roll has been released and a pair of Saint Joseph's College players have been honored.
Senior midfielder Jackie Wilson (Tiverton, R.I.) and junior midfielder Elyse Caiazzo (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) are the first players in the 10-year history of the SJC women's lacrosse program to claim the national organization's academic honor.
The IWLCA honored 532 student-athletes from 159 different institutions on the 2017 IWLCA Zag Sports Division III Academic Honor Roll. To be eligible for this honor, student-athletes must be a junior, senior, or graduate student and have earned a cumulative academic GPA of 3.50 or greater.
Wilson graduated with her Nursing degree in May after netting 40 goals and 17 assists for 57 total points with 81 ground balls, 79 draw controls, and 34 caused turnovers while playing in all 17 games as a senior captain last spring. The three-time Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) All-Academic Team honoree and two-year All-Conference recipient scored 100 goals with 52 assists for 152 points with 250 ground balls, 322 draw controls, and 111 caused turnovers in 75 games.
The four-year starter finished her four years on the field ranked second in team history in games played, ground balls, draw controls, and caused turnovers and fifth in assists, sixth in goals, and eighth in points.
Caiazzo, who is pursuing a double major in Political Science and Environmental Science, tallied 67 goals and 13 assists for 80 total points with 56 ground balls, 55 draw controls, and 15 caused turnovers in 17 games en route to claiming GNAC Offensive Player of the Year honors and her third-consecutive First Team All-GNAC accolade last season.
In three collegiate campaigns, Caiazzo – a two-time GNAC All-Academic Team honoree - is already the program's all-time points leader (251) and ranks second in team history in goals (204), fourth in draw controls (138), sixth in assists (47) and ground balls (184), and eighth in caused turnovers (62) over 55 career contests.
Under the watch of fifth-year Head Coach Rupert Lewis last spring, Saint Joseph's posted a 13-4 record with an 8-1 mark in GNAC play en route to claiming the #2 seed in the conference tournament. The Monks opened postseason play with a 17-6 quarterfinal victory over #7 Norwich University on May 3rd, but the 2017 campaign came to a close with a hard-fought 11-10 loss at the hands of #6 Simmons College on May 5th.
