Monks Fall to Wildcats, 17-11

STANDISH, Maine – Johnson & Wales University (7-1, 4-0 GNAC) defeated Saint Joseph's College (6-2, 3-1 GNAC), 17-11, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's lacrosse contest at the SJC Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Johnson & Wales held a 7-1 cushion after sophomore Maria Patane (Greenwich, N.Y.) scored a pair of man-down goals in a 20-second span, the latter with 17:38 left in the first half. Saint Joseph's fought back into the game with four goals over the next four minutes and faced a 10-6 deficit heading into intermission.

The Monks trailed 11-7 after senior Elyse Caiazzo (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) scored 2:41 into the second stanza, but the Wildcats followed with a 5-0 run, as a Madeline Bishara (Saunderstown, R.I.) man-down marker capped the outburst and lifted the visitors to a 16-7 lead with 18:37 remaining.

St. Joe's proceeded to rattle off four unanswered goals, as a Kara Kelly (York, Maine) strike made it a 16-11 game with 6:37 left, but Johnson & Wales managed to keep the hosts off the board for the remainder of play and junior Kathy Ensor (St. Louis, Mo.) scored with 1:54 on the clock to account for the 17-11 final.

THE KEEPERS:

Saint Joseph's sophomore Kaylin Mansir (West Gardiner, Maine) made seven saves in the loss while JWU freshman netminder Cassidy O'Hara (Mashpee, Mass.) steered away 12 shots in the victory.

TEAM STATS:

Johnson & Wales held advantages in shots (38-28) and ground balls while Saint Joseph's held an 18-12 lead in draw controls on the afternoon.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Caiazzo scored three goals with five ground balls, nine draw controls, and a pair of caused turnovers
  • Junior Brittney Arsenault (Westbrook, Maine) netted a pair of goals
  • Sophomore Madison Beaulieu (West Gardiner, Maine) scored two goals on three shots
  • Junior Samantha Medlin (Kingston, Mass.) tallied a goal and two assists
  • Junior Kayla Kelly (York, Maine) scored a goal with two assists, seven ground balls, and six draw controls
  • Senior Brianne Maloney (South Portland, Maine) picked up two ground balls with three caused turnovers

LEADERS – JOHNSON & WALES:

  • Patane registered four goals, two assists, six ground balls, and three caused turnovers
  • Junior Allison Pazienski (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) tallied three goals, four assists, and two ground balls
  • Freshman Dani Lydecker (Valley Cottage, N.Y.) scored three goals with five draw controls and two caused turnovers
  • Senior Raquel Pederzani (Coventry, R.I.) netted three goals with a pair of assists

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 4-2 in the history of the series with Johnson & Wales University, which defeated the Monks by an 18-10 score in Providence last spring. The Wildcats are the only GNAC team to defeat St. Joe's during regular season play since the start of the 2015 season, as the Monks are 29-2 since the beginning of that campaign.
