STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (8-2, 4-1 GNAC) marched past Norwich University (4-4, 3-2 GNAC), 20-10, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's lacrosse contest at the SJC Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Saint Joseph's opened the contest with six unanswered goals and held an 8-2 lead after freshman Josie Ring (Newfield, Maine) scored on a free-position shot with 7:19 left in the first half. Norwich came to life and potted three straight strikes, including a goal from junior Kathryn Albretson (Cotuit, Mass.) at the 52-second mark that cut the Cadets' deficit down to 8-5 heading into intermission.
The conference counterparts essentially traded scores in the opening 10 minutes of the second stanza with the hosts on top 12-8 with 20:49 left, but the Monks found their groove and netted five-consecutive goals – from five different players – and held a 17-8 lead after junior Kara Kelly (York, Maine) scored with 12:30 remaining.
THE KEEPERS:
SJC sophomore goalie Kaylin Mansir (West Gardiner, Maine) made three saves in the victory. Norwich employed two netminders in the setback, as sophomore starter Lawson Hayes (Moorestown, N.J.) made 10 saves in 41:18 minutes and junior Janice Bolton (Stow, Mass.) stopped four shots in 18:42 minutes.
TEAM STATS:
Saint Joseph's held the lead in shots (46-14), ground balls (24-21), and draw controls (24-9) in the victory.
LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:
· Kayla Kelly netted five goals with four ground balls, eight draw controls, and four caused turnovers
· Junior Kayla Kelly (York, Maine) scored five goals on 14 shots with three ground balls
· Senior Elyse Caiazzo (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) tallied four goals, 10 draw controls, three ground balls, and three caused turnovers
· Sophomore Madison Beaulieu (West Gardiner, Maine) added two goals, three assists, and four ground balls
· Ring chipped in with two goals and an assist
· Junior Brittney Arsenault (Westbrook, Maine) tacked on two goals and an assist with three ground balls, three draw controls, and a pair of caused turnovers
LEADERS – NORWICH:
· Sophomore Olivia Bloom (Annapolis, Md.) netted five goals on five shots
· Albretson tallied four goals, five ground balls, and two caused turnovers
· Freshman Emily Schromm (North Attleboro, Mass.) chipped in with four draw controls, two ground balls, and two caused turnovers
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 9-6 in the history of the series with Norwich University and has now defeated the Cadets in eight-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2014 campaign.
