STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (9-3, 5-2 GNAC) edged Mount Ida College (10-2, 6-1 GNAC), 9-7, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's lacrosse contest at the SJC Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Monks held a 5-3 lead at halftime and a 7-6 advantage after junior Brooke Scahill (Gales Ferry, Conn.) scored her second goal of the game with 14:03 left in the second stanza. Junior Samantha Medlin (Kingston, Mass.) assisted on a goal from sophomore Madison Beaulieu (West Gardiner, Maine) at the 13:25 mark and netted one herself 44 seconds later to put the game out of reach and hand the Mustangs their first conference setback of the season.
THE KEEPERS:
SJC sophomore goalie Kaylin Mansir (West Gardiner, Maine) made six saves to pick up the victory while Mount Ida senior netminder Eleanor Garvey (Eldridge, Md.) stopped eight shots in a losing effort.
TEAM STATS:
Saint Joseph's held the lead in shots (25-23), draw controls (25-23), and ground balls (24-19) in the triumph.
LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:
- Junior Kayla Kelly (York, Maine) tallied three goals, three ground balls, seven draw controls, and two caused turnovers
- Senior Elyse Caiazzo (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) contributed three goals – including the 250th of her career - with two ground balls, two draw controls, and a pair of caused turnovers
- Medlin added a goal and an assist with a game-high six ground balls
- Junior Brittney Arsenault (Westbrook, Maine) picked up five ground balls with a pair of caused turnovers
- Beaulieu netted a pair of goals
LEADERS – MOUNT IDA:
- Junior Alyssa Kelly (Lee, Mass.) netted five goals with two ground balls
- Scahill scored two goals – including the 100th of her career - with an assist, four draw controls, and a pair of ground balls
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 8-1 in the history of the series with Mount Ida College and has now defeated the Mustangs in seven-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2012 campaign.
SENIOR MOMENT:
Prior to the start of the contest, Saint Joseph's held a brief ceremony to honor the program's three seniors: Caiazzo, Brianne Maloney (South Portland, Maine), and Emily Manning (Charlestown, R.I.). The trio has helped the Monks post a 55-12 (.820) overall record - including a 31-3 (.911) mark in GNAC play - with a GNAC Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance during their time on the field.
