BOSTON, Mass. – Simmons University 5-3, 3-2 GNAC) erased a six-goal deficit with eight unanswered tallies in the final 15 minutes of the second half to defeat Saint Joseph's College (4-4, 4-1 GNAC), 15-13, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contest on Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks held a 5-1 lead after junior Maddy Beaulieu (West Gardiner, Maine) scored with 14:37 left in the first half. St. Joe's led 8-4 at intermission and extended the advantage to 13-7 when senior Brittney Arsenault (Westbrook, Maine) netted her fourth goal of the season at the 17:05 mark of the second stanza.

But the momentum quickly swung in the Sharks' favor, as the hosts maintained possession for the remainder of the evening by winning eight of 10 draw controls. Simmons outshot St. Joe's by a 12-2 margin following the Arsenault goal and took advantage of a pair of SJC yellow cards by notching two man-up markers in the closing 15 minutes.

THE KEEPERS:

Saint Joseph's freshman Madelyn Nelson (Casco, Maine) made seven saves in the loss while Simmons sophomore Cat Cross (Beverly, Mass.) turned away six shots in the victory.

TEAM STATS:

Simmons held the lead in shots (29-24), draw controls (19-11) and caused turnovers (7-6) while Saint Joseph's posted an 18-17 edge in ground balls on the evening.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Senior Kayla Kelly (York, Maine) scored two goals with four ground balls, three draw controls, and two caused turnovers
  • Freshman Logan Champlin (Alfred, Maine) tallied two goals, three draw controls, and two ground balls
  • Sophomore Lydia Dexter (Oakland, Maine) chipped in with two goals and four draw controls
  • Senior Kara Kelly (York, Maine) scored twice
