STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (8-6) cruised past University of Maine-Farmington (5-7), 15-3, in a non-conference women's lacrosse contest on a rainy Monday night at the SJC Athletics Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The visiting Beavers scored the game's first goal just 1:14 into play, as freshman Kaya Backman (South Portland, Maine) hit pay-dirt off an Isabella Monbouquette (Bath, Maine) pass to provide UMF with an early advantage.
The contest stood at a 2-2 tie after Monbouquette found the back of the net at the 26:13 mark, but the Monks' offense came to life and dominated the remainder of the half as sophomores Lydia Dexter (Oakland, Maine) and Emily Ryan (Wakefield, Mass.) and senior Kayla Kelly (York, Maine) netted two goals apiece over the following 17 minutes to lift the hosts to a 9-3 cushion heading into intermission.
The rain persisted along with the SJC offense in the second stanza, as St. Joe's rattled off six unanswered goals to claim the 15-3 victory.
THE KEEPERS:
Saint Joseph's freshman Madelyn Nelson (Casco, Maine) registered five saves on eight shots to pick up the win while UMaine-Farmington split time in goal, with senior Heather Boland (Griswold, Conn.) posting five saves in the first half and freshman Lydia Wasina (Waterboro, Maine) turning away three shots in the second frame.
TEAM STATS:
Saint Joseph's held the lead in shots (28-18), shots on goal (23-8), ground balls (28-26), and caused turnovers (10-7) while UMaine-Farmington posted a 12-7 advantage in draw controls.
LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:
- Freshman Logan Champlin (Alfred, Maine) tallied three goals and an assist with six ground balls and four caused turnovers
- Senior Kara Kelly (York, Maine) added three goals, an assist, and four ground balls
- Kayla Kelly contributed two goals and an assist with three ground balls, five draw controls, and two caused turnovers
- Sophomore Josie Ring (Newfield, Maine) chipped in with a goal, two assists and three ground balls
LEADERS – UMAINE-FARMINGTON:
- Monbouquette scored a goal with an assist and two ground balls
- Kelly Lynch produced an assist with seven draw controls and two ground balls
- Nicole Schofield added five ground balls and three draw controls
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
Saint Joseph's is now 6-1 all-time versus UMaine-Farmington and has defeated the Beavers in six-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2010 campaign.
