BIDDEFORD, Maine – The University of New England women's lacrosse team opened its season with an 18-5 victory over Saint Joseph's on Sunday afternoon at UNE Blue Bolt Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
UNE stormed out of the gate scoring the first four goals of the game. Junior Josie Ring (Newfield, Maine) put the Monks on the board for their only score of the first half at the 17:05 mark. The Nor'easters scored the final eight of the half, including a four-goal spurt by junior Keara Dwyer (Cazenovia, N.Y.) and junior Casey Conwell (North Andover, Mass.) who tallied three scores over the opening 30 minutes as UNE led 12-1 at halftime.
After the half the Monks scroed four times while five different Nor'easters scored in the second.
THE KEEPERS:
Saint Joseph's sophomore Madelyn Nelson (Casco, Maine) had nine saves in the loss. New England's first-year Madison Bruzzese (Reading, Mass.) made seven stops for UNE to pickup her first career victory between the pipes.
LEADERS- SJC:
Ring had two goals with three shots.
Junior Jocelyn Moscato (West Haven, Conn.) had two shots with one goal
Junior Liz Callahan (Scarborough, Maine) tallied a goal with three caused turnovers
Sophomore Logan Champlin (Alfred, Maine) had four draw controls, three caused turnovers, and four ground balls.
Senior Maddy Beaulieu (West Gardiner, Maine) tallied a goal and an assist
Junior Alexandra Belaire (Greene, Maine) had three ground balls and one caused turnover
LEADERS - UNE:
Senior Anna Stowell (Sutton, N.H.) scored two goals to go with an assist, reaching the 100-point milestone for her career.
Dwyer led the way for the Nor'easters with five points on four goals and an assist.
Junior Molly Camelo (Melrose, Mass.) added three goals and an assist with five draw controls.
Sophomore Danielle Skinner (Mansfield, Mass.) had five ground balls to go with four caused turnovers.
Conwell had three goals and three draw controls on the day.
First-year Emily Jussaume (Tyngsboro, Mass.) pulled in eight draw controls and two goals.
