HENNIKER, N.H. – Saint Joseph's College (1-3-0) blanked New England College (4-1-0), 2-0, in non-conference women's soccer action at Don Melander Field on Sunday afternoon.
After a scoreless first half, the Monks would get on the board in the 49th minute as Hannah Leblanc (Andover, Mass.) collected the ball off a defender and took a long shot from deep in the left corner. The ball found the top right corner of the net to put the Monks up 1-0.
Eight minutes later a tripping infraction inside the penalty box would award the Monks a penalty shot, which Danielle Daigle (Dayton, Maine) swiftly buried just inside the left post.
In net, sophomore Marina Cameron (Houlton, Maine) made four saves and recorded the first shutout of her career, while NEC goalkeeper Tricia Sardagnola (Shrewsbury, Mass.) totaled nine saves in a losing effort.
LeBlanc paced the Royal Blue with five shots with four on goal, while junior Caroline Mols (Verona, N.J.) led NEC with a four shots. Overall, the Pilgrims outshot the Monks by a 20-19 margin and held a 7-4 lead in corner kicks on the afternoon.
With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 3-0 in the history of the series with New England College with all three victories being shutouts. Prior to this afternoon, the New England Region rivals had not met since the 2006 campaign, when the Monks blanked the Pilgrims, 4-0, in Henniker.
Both teams return to action this Wednesday with non-conference contests, as Saint Joseph's plays at University of Maine-Farmington at 4:00 PM while New England College hosts Mitchell College at 7:00 PM.
