WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – University of Saint Joseph junior Sara Barnick (Watertown, Conn.) had two goals and an assist as the USJ soccer team defeated St. Joseph's College of Maine, 6-0 Saturday in a GNAC match-up at home.
The Blue Jays improved to 6-4-1 overall and 3-1-1 in the GNAC. The Monks dropped to 5-6-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the conference.
Dayna Gambino (Newington, Conn.) had a goal and an assist for USJ. Lindsey Cifaldi (Wolcott, Conn.), Amanda Montano (North Haven, Conn.) and Emily Burke (Windsor Locks, Conn.) each scored for USJ and Shelby Tallman (Colchester, Conn.) earned her first collegiate points with two assists.
Melissa Dodge (Wolcott, Conn.) made eight saves for her third consecutive shutout, which was her fourth of the season and 22nd of her career. Dodge has been unscored upon for 279 minutes and seven seconds.
The Blue Jays wasted little time getting started and built a 4-0 lead in the first 25 minutes. Burke began the scoring with her team-leading fifth goal, 5:56 in when she finished a breakaway with a low shot inside the left post. Barnick scored her first of the day at 18:10 when she took a pass from Gambino at the left side of the box and scored under the crossbar. Then just 32 seconds later it was Barnick feeding Gambino, who scored inside the right post. Amanda Montano finished the first-half scoring at 24:23 when she one-timed home a corner from Tallman.
In the second half, Cifaldi scored off another Tallman corner in the 48th minute and Barnick notched the final tally in the 63rd minute when she took the ball from a defender and scored just under the crossbar.
SJC goalkeeper Marina Camron (Houlton, Maine) entered the game in the 18th minute and made three saves for the Monks.
USJ hosts Lasell in a GNAC showdown, Wed. Oct. 8 at 4 p.m. SJC hosts Anna Maria, also Wed. in a conference game, beginning at 3:30 p.m.
