Monks and Falcons Play to Scoreless Stalemate in GNAC Opener

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (2-2-1, 0-0-1 GNAC) and Albertus Magnus College (1-2-1, 0-0-1 GNAC) dueled to a 0-0 stalemate in what was the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) season opener for both teams in women's soccer action at Westerlea Way Field on Saturday afternoon.

THE LEAD

In a game that featured plenty of back and forth play in the midfield, neither team managed to produce multiple scoring opportunities. Saint Joseph's junior goalkeeper Brooke Troup (East Bridgewater, Mass.) notched seven saves over 110 minutes while Albertus Magnus sophomore keeper Lexie Fenn (Oakville, Conn.) made four stops in a shutout performance.

The closest either team came to breaking the scoreless tie came in the 77th minute when SJC freshman Lillian Bisset (Jefferson, Maine) clanged a shot off the crossbar.

  • Albertus senior Danielle Polvan (East Haven, Conn.) recorded a game-high six shots with three on target

Albertus Magnus owned the advantage in shots (17-11), shots on goal (7-4), and corner kicks (6-3) on the afternoon. The Monks outshot the Falcons by a 5-3 margin during the two overtime frames.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING

Today's result counts as the first stalemate between the Monks and Falcons in the 11-game history of the matchup. St. Joe's owns a 6-4-1 all-time record versus AMC and suffered a 4-3 defeat at the hands of the Falcons last season. For the Monks, the scoreless tie is the program's first since the team played Johnson & Wales University to a 0-0 draw on October 23rd, 2012. Saint Joseph's has played in 14 scoreless games - including four in GNAC play - in program history.

NEXT!

Saint Joseph's begins a four-game road swing with a non-conference contest at Maine-Farmington on Tuesday at 4:00 PM. The Monks do not return home until September 24th, when the team hosts GNAC-rival Simmons College in an 11:00 AM start.

Albertus Magnus plays at Wesleyan College on Tuesday in a non-conference match slated to start at 4:30 PM.
