Saint Joseph’s Shoots Past Mount Ida, 4-0

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (6-4-1, 3-0-1 GNAC) toppled Mount Ida College (3-6-0, 1-3-0 GNAC), 4-0, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women's soccer action at Westerlea Way Field on Wednesday afternoon.

THE LEAD

Saint Joseph's held a 17-1 shots advantage in the first half but did not find the back of the net until the 37th minute when sophomore Colleen Sheehan (Medway, Mass.) connected off a Lauren Stiles (Gorham, Maine) crossing pass. The Monks proceeded to tack on three goals off just nine shots in the second stanza, as Sheehan netted her second tally while Stiles and second-year standout Haley DaGraca (Saco, Maine) both hit pay-dirt to account for the 4-0 final.

THE KEEPERS

Saint Joseph's employed a pair of goalies in the shutout victory, as junior captain Brooke Troup (East Bridgewater, Mass.) made one save in 69:51 of play and freshman Cori Balam (Lyndeborough, N.H.) was untested in 20:59 of relief.

Mount Ida freshman AnnaMarie Seiler (Biddeford, Maine) was very busy in net and made 14 saves in the losing effort.

TEAM STATS

Saint Joseph's held the advantage in shots (26-5) and shots on goal (18-1) while Mount Ida owned a 5-2 lead in corner kicks.

NOTEWORTHY

  • DaGraca registered a game-high nine shots with five on net
  • Freshman Hannah Butler (Melrose, Mass.), junior captain Sarah Comtois (Lowell, Mass.), and Stiles were credited with an assist apiece in the victory
  • The Monks have posted three-consecutive shutouts for the first time since the 2014 campaign and fourth occasion since joining the GNAC in 2007

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING

With the victory, Saint Joseph's remains undefeated in the history of the series with Mount Ida College and now owns a 9-0-1 all-time record versus the Mustangs…Four of the Monks' nine wins over the Mustangs have been of the shutout variety…Today's SJC goal total is the most scored in a game between the GNAC foes…The Monks required extra play to defeat the Mustangs – 3-2 - in Newton last fall.

NEXT!

Both teams hit the road with games versus conference opponents on Saturday, when Saint Joseph's plays at Johnson & Wales University and Mount Ida treks to Rivier University. Both games are slated to start at 1:00 PM.
