Saint Joseph’s and Norwich Duel to 1-1 Deadlock

NORTHFIELD, Vt.  – The Norwich University women's soccer team rallied in the second half to salvage a 1-1 tie against the third-place Saint Joseph's College Monks on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Ashley Carvalho (Pinellas Park, Fla.) scored on a well-placed free kick from 25 yards out that beat Saint Joseph's goalkeeper Brooke Troup over her head as she was battling the sun to knot the score at 1-1. The goal came in the 66th minute and was Carvalho's second tally of the season.

Saint Joseph's (8-5-3, 5-1-3 GNAC) opened the scoring in the 29th minute with Desiree Parent scoring from the top of the 18 with a shot that bounced off the right post and into the back of the net for her second goal of the season.

NU senior goalkeeper Holly Lutz (Hamburg, N.J.) turned in one of the best performances of her Cadet career, stopping 14 of 15 shots to secure the tie in her final game on Sabine Field. Troup made three saves for Saint Joseph's.

Saint Joseph's outshot 38-7, including 11-0 in the two overtimes sessions.

Despite the tie, Norwich has been officially eliminated from the GNAC Tournament for the fifth straight year. The Cadets trail St. Joseph (Conn.) by six points with only two games remaining and the Blue Jays hold the head-to-head tiebreaker advantage.

Norwich travels to Rivier on Wednesday, Oct. 19 before closing out the GNAC regular season at Albertus Magnus next Saturday. Saint Joseph's hosts Emmanuel College at 3:00 PM Wednesday and Lasell College in a 12:00 PM start Saturday.
